For our 5-night stay in Chiang Mai, Thailand, we had plenty of hotels to choose from since it was low season. I’m a sucker for architecture, so one hotel caught my eye.
Phor Liang Meun Terracotta Arts Hotel
As I scrolled through hotels on Booking.com, the architecture of Phor Liang Meun Terracotta Arts Hotel appealed to me. It was around $100 per night, so definitely not the cheapest hotel in Chiang Mai. But, I figured the location and aesthetics were worth the splurge.
The hotel is located inside the brick walls and moat of Chiang Mai’s old city. It’s a block away from a 7-11 and within walking distance of the famous Sunday Night Market and many Buddhist temples. A gorgeous restaurant is just across the street, and next door is a local dive with the popular regional dish Khao Soi for just a few dollars.
The ground are simply gorgeous, with Terra Cotta sculptures and gardens:
Aside from the architecture, my favorite thing about the hotel was the friendly lobby staff. Every time we walked in our out, we were greeted warmly and asked about our day. The staff recommended several restaurants, markets and massage places during our stay. And all of their recommendations were great!
On our next to last day, we gathered our laundry for the hotel staff to send out. It was returned later that evening. I don’t remember the exact cost, but it was cheap!
Room and Amenities
Our room had two twin beds and a balcony:
Our beds were comfy. The A/C worked great, which is important in the summer.

Our small balcony didn’t have much of a view, but I still enjoyed sitting out there in the evening:
A full breakfast was included each morning.
We could order eggs prepared any way, and the buffet contained Thai, Japanese and Western food:
We looked forward to breakfast every day.
And last but not least, the pool! With the hot weather, it was nice to have a place to cool off at the end of the day.
Overall Thoughts
I enjoyed our stay at Phor Liang Meun Terracotta Arts Hotel. I would stay there again if we return to Chiang Mai.

Nice place indeed. Breakfast seems well-rounded too.
I expected the prices in Thai to be lower, but almost double rates compared to pre-2020 levels is the trend for now. I suppose the demand is still high.
The tourism industry is booming and local municipalities are counting on it for higher revenues, but same time many places gotten “overtourism” and locals being pushing back to curb it. When China gets economic upturn – waves of Chinese travelers will sweep like tsunami. Although they visit mostly on the beaten path, the effect will be across the board. And I’m not criticizing – just stating the facts.
I already see an influx of visitors in remote areas of the US. A lot of big city dwellers trading flying far away for driving few hours to less-known regions in surrounding states. This is good for rural economies; our region gotten several new chain hotels past 2 years – they must’ve predicted regional tourism peaking and getting prepared.
