My Surprising Credit Card Denial

May 5, 2025 By Nancy 6 Comments

Last week, I was so excited about the news that Cardless no longer has a “one card per lifetime” rule (see this post). I already have the TAP Miles & Go Amex card from Cardless, and I couldn’t wait to add another card to my wallet to earn a sign-up bonus. So imagine my disappointment when my credit card app was denied!

My 2nd Cardless Card Application

I didn’t have a hard time deciding which Cardless card I wanted to apply for. The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Signature Credit Card (non-affiliate link) currently has a welcome bonus of 70,000 Avios afters spending $3500 in the first 90 days. The annual fee is just $99. I wanted these miles because I can transfer them to British Airways Avios program and use for award flights on Iberia from DFW to Europe.

The requirements for getting a 2nd Cardless card include:

  • The application must be 60 days after your most recent Cardeless card approval.
  • The application must be 45 days after a recent Cardless card decline.
  • You can only have one Cardless card per brand.
  • You cannot already have the same card.

I met all of those criteria. Plus, I only had one new credit card so far this year (and it’s a business card) and I’ve only opened 5 new personal credit cards in the past 24 months. Not to mention, I didn’t sock drawer my first Cardless card. I’ve intentionally put some occasional spending on it.

When I applied for the card, I had to verify my identity by uploading a photo of my passport and uploading a selfie. After my identify was verified, I assumed an online approval was coming. Wrong!

Instead, the screen said this:

An unknown error occurred. In the email that followed shortly, the reason listed for my denial was “too many previously opened credit card accounts.”

Then, I remembered what happened when I applied for my first Cardless card in 2023. I was initially denied, but a few days later I received an email saying they made a mistake and I could have the card if I still wanted (see this post). Could that be the case again? I hope so. I plan to wait a few days before having my husband apply for the card.

If you recently applied for your second Cardless card, please share your data points in the comments.

Just was denied 2 days ago. Same email, same wording (“Too many previously opened credit card accounts.”). I had the TAP Cardless card in the past that I closed last November. I had not applied for a new card since September of last year. But I have probably 10 to 15 cards opened, some with the default balance that can be huge.
I called today the cardless customer service, and they did not want to reconsider. Also, they could see my past account but apparently they could not see any information about denial of the recent application and gave me generic answer.
I actually might have to call First Electronic Bank to ask for reconsideration.

@Christophe Interesting! Thanks for the data point about calling reconsideration.

Thanks for the data points! Bummer to see other denials. I’ll be sure to post if my approval decision changes.

Denied. My last cardless card was 5 years ago. 5/24. Denied reason: too many approvals.

Thanks for sharing. You may have well shared what happened to me 2 days ago because it is 100% the same thing, except I had Penguins card and closed it a few years back. So I didn’t have any cardless cards now. My score is over 800. Now I’m hopeful they may take a 2nd look. If not I will just wait a bit and try calling for recon.

Hey, Thanks for sharing your experience with the Cardless card application. It’s surprising to hear about the denial despite meeting all the criteria. Hopefully, it’s just a glitch like before, and you’ll receive a follow-up email correcting the mistake. Looking forward to hearing how it turns out
