One of my favorite days of the year is when the school calendar for the next school year comes out. Seriously, it’s like a holiday for me! Since my kids are in older grades and I’m a substitute teacher, we have to plan our trips around this calendar. The calendar for our 2024-2025 school year just dropped last night.
Dates We Can Use for Trips
For the next school year, there are a few extended days off we can use for travel aside from the normal spring break, winter break and summer break:
- 4-day weekend for Labor Day
- 4-day weekend in October
- New “Fall Break” 5-day weekend in early November
- Full week off for Thanksgiving week
- 3-day weekend in January
- 4-day weekend in February
- 3-day weekend in April
I won’t be planning trips for all of those breaks. It’s likely my kids will have theatre rehearsals or tennis matches over some of those weekends. Plus, we can use a few of those extended weekends to visit my oldest son in college. But, I’m not opposed to planning a few short trips over those time periods.
Spring Break Conundrum
While my son’s college calendar hasn’t yet been finalized, it does appear that all of my kids will have the same spring break in 2025. This upcoming spring break (2024), they have different weeks off.
The conundrum is that my college son doesn’t want to travel during spring break. He already has to travel to come home, and he just wants to hang out with his dogs and friends. The rest of the family, however, would like to go somewhere for spring break. The weather is usually crappy here, and everywhere local is crowded due to all the neighboring school districts having the same spring break.
Of course, we want to spend time with our college son. So, we will likely split the difference. We’re thinking about taking a quick 3-4 night trip somewhere. If my oldest son decides not to go, we will still have half of the week to spend with him at home.
My middle son suggests we go to Las Vegas. He’s seen YouTube videos of some of the roller coasters there, and thinks it looks like a fun destination. It’s been many years since I’ve spent time in Vegas. I wouldn’t mind seeing a few shows there.
But, I’d rather go somewhere warm and sunny. A Florida beach, a resort in Tulum or anywhere in the Caribbean sounds fantastic for a few days.
Has your school district’s calendar been published for the next school year yet? Are you planning any short trips during the school year?

The school district our kids go to releases the calendar more than 12 months in advance of the next school year. Works great. Even better, the last time they did it (last year) they released three years worth!
The district my wife teaches in, however, doesn’t release the calendar for the following year until December. Drives me crazy, LOL. This year though, they released the next two years! YEAH BABY!
@projectx Lucky!! One year, we didn’t get the calendar until February. It was crazy.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that anxiously awaits the school calendar release!
@projectx I wish the calendar would come out even earlier!
