One of my favorite cards, the Chase Sapphire Reserve (our affiliate link), now has a higher bonus of 80,000 points! (Previous bonus was 60k). Let’s take a look. My husband has this card, and we love the benefits!
Chase Sapphire Reserve (CSR)
- 80,000 bonus points after spending $4000 in the first 3 months
- 10X points on hotels and 5X points on flights booked through Chase travel portal
- 3X points on travel
- 3X points on dining
- Global Entry/TSA precheck credit
- Points worth 1.5X in Chase travel portal
- Priority pass lounge access
- No foreign transaction fees
- $300 annual travel credit
- $550 annual fee
Note: Chase only allows you to have EITHER the Chase Sapphire Reserve card OR the Chase Sapphire Preferred card (CSP), not both. In addition. Chase’s 5/24 rule applies to these cards. See here for more information.
Chase Ultimate Rewards can be used for travel expenses in Chase’s travel portal. You can also transfer those points to many travel partners, including Southwest Airlines, United and Hyatt.
CSR vs. CSP
My husband has had the CSR for years. We love having the Priority pass lounge access and earning 3X points on travel. This card’s points are worth more than the CSP when we use them in the Chase travel portal.
However, the $550 annual fee is hard to swallow, especially for beginners in this hobby. If you subtract out the $300 annual fee, this card’s annual fee is $155 higher than the CSP’s fee. For some folks, that higher annual fee is worth it to earn the 3X points on travel and get more value within the Chase travel portal.
But for beginners to this miles and points hobby, I still recommend the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. Although the bonus is lower at 60k, the annual fee is only $95.
Our partners at Travel Freely put together this great comparison of the Chase Sapphire Reserve vs. the Chase Sapphire Preferred. Check it out here!
