Carnival Cruise Line Announces Phased-in Restart for August

This morning, Carnival Cruise Line announced its plan for a phased-in restart of cruising. See the official press release here.

All cruises through July 31 will be canceled. Beginning August 1, 8 of the fleet’s 26 cruise ships will resume cruising. The 8 ships that will sail in August include:

  • Galveston:  Carnival Dream, Carnival Freedom and Carnival Vista
  • Miami:  Carnival Horizon, Carnival Magic and Carnival Sensation
  • Port Canaveral:  Carnival Breeze and Carnival Elation.

All other North American and Australian homeport cruises will be canceled through August 31. In addition, all Alaska cruises on Carnival Spirit will be canceled as well as the September repositioning cruise to Hawaii and the October repositioning cruise to Australia.

What Does This Mean for Other Cruise Lines?

Since the beginning of this pandemic, Carnival and its subsidiaries have led the pack in terms of being the first to cancel cruises. I expect that Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and the rest will follow suit by canceling cruises through the end of July. Most other lines currently have only canceled cruises through part of June.

But, if you have a cruise scheduled for August, don’t get your hopes up. I’m still not sure that the cruise lines can get their act together to sail by the beginning of August. The CDC has laid out a laundry list of requirements for cruise lines to sail again, which includes on-board testing and isolation capabilities.

However, it is encouraging to hear at least one cruise line’s plans to get restarted. While I don’t plan to cruise any time soon, my family loves cruising. We hope to return to cruising in the future.
