Just a quick heads up on this new offer from Capital One. The normal bonus is 20,000 points. It has been increased to 40,000 points for a limited time. I’m not sure when this offer will end, which is why I’ve decided to write the post.
It may be gone tomorrow, or it might be around for weeks. It does pay me commission if you apply through my site. Thanks in advance if you decide to use my link! Capital One usually pulls all 3 agencies. Here are more details:
- Enjoy a one-time bonus of 40,000 miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months, equal to $400 in travel
- Earn unlimited 2X miles on every purchase, every day
- Fly any airline, stay at any hotel, anytime
- Travel when you want—no blackout dates
- Miles don’t expire
- No limit to the miles you can earn
- No foreign transaction fees
- No annual fee for the first year; $59 after that
- You can redeem these points for any travel expense, including hotel bills and cruises. Capital One had an increased offer of 50,000 points for this very same card at the beginning of the year, but I have my doubts on whether it will come back any time soon. But you never know!
- I am debating on whether to apply for this card or Wells Fargo Propel. You can read about both bonuses in my “Best credit card deals for family” page. I’m leaning towards Capital One because this bank rarely increases their sign-up bonuses. Let me know if you have any questions.

I am leaning towards adding in the venture card for my wife’s AOR. As I understand it, the Venture can be used for Disney reservations, while the Propel is only for flights. I could use the points to subsidize a Disney annual pass.

@Cheapblackdad From what I understood, Propel bonus can be used for anything, not just flights. Some have gotten a better value by redeeming for flights, but only due to Wells Fargo banking relationship. See this thread on Flyertalk for more http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/credit-card-programs/1573549-new-wells-fargo-40k-3k-3mo-propel-world-20k-3k-3mo-propel-365-amex.html
As far as Venture card, the bonus can be used for travel-coded expense. Not sure on Disney pass, though. Another thing to be aware of: The bill has to be less or equal to the available amount in points. For example: $400 travel bill=40,000 points. If the bill is $401, you won’t be able to redeem. Just some things to consider.
Still, it is a good bonus, and I applied for it myself, though it went into pending status.

My husband and I both applied for the Capital One 40K offer. I hope they don’t make us jump through any hoops, but both of our apps went to pending. I’m fine either way, but I hope we both get one =) Neither one of us have a Capital One card.

Holly, I hope you get them without any issues. I would give it a few days and see how things go, before calling. Maybe they will be approved on their own.

I had to jump through a lot of hoops to get the Wells Fargo Propel. They finally approved it about 3 weeks after I applied. I had to send them copies of the past 2 years of tax returns! I really didn’t want to do that, but I hated to waste a credit pull.
The Capital One Venture card is very convenient with the Purchase Eraser feature. I no longer have the card but I used it to buy miles for one of my Thailand tickets. I was lucky to get the Venture card about 3 or 4 years ago when they were matching your miles in other programs up to 100,000 miles. I had more than that in Delta so I got 100,000 Capital One points! I used it for the Thailand miles, several domestic rental cars and a domestic flight to Florida.

Hey, Laura! Very interesting. I applied in my husband’s name and Propel got approved after 7 days on its own. I’m debating on whether to do it for me, but my income is so small. What to do?
Several good offers… I’m driving myself crazy on what to apply for, as I don’t do any m/s Maybe it’s time to start? 🙂 I do want to try for Venture in my name, will decide on it tomorrow. I might have to skip Amex SPG this time around.

Capital one is also known for requesting paystubs. Just FYI.

@Doctorofcredit Thanks for heads up! Now I’m really torn on what to do! We had good success with Wells Fargo and Capital One, but that was for my husband. My income is minuscule, and even though I can put household salary, I wonder if my luck will be different.

Hi–we are trying to decide if my husband should apply for this card. He just applied for and got 2 credit cards about 2 months ago. We have already spent the minimums on those. Just wondered if it’s likely he would be denied this card if he applied because he got those other cards just 2months ago? Do you always need to wait 3 months in between cards? Thanks.

Shoesinks, I can’t tell you what to do on this one, but let me give you my experience with this card. My husband got it while it had the 50K offer, and he had more than 2 hard pulls in the previous 3 months. One thing to be aware of: Capital One usually pulls all 3 agencies, so, decide if the bonus is worth it. Otherwise, go with Wells Fargo Propel, which pulls just one.
As far as spacing of 3 months, no, I don’t think it’s critical, especially if it’s just 2 apps. I personally don’t follow this rule, it’s more of benefit to those who get 5 or 6 cards at once.
Once again, I can’t guarantee how it will go, but your husband has a good shot of approval IMO, as long as his score is high. Let me know what you decide and how your experience goes.
