Shanghai was our last stop on our epic summer trip to Japan and China. I already posted about our day at Shanghai Disneyland, so this post will detail our non-Disney activities in Shanghai as well as some thoughts on the city.

Shanghai Wild Animal Park

Our last full day in China turned out to be a rainy day. I wanted to explore some indoor areas, but my daughter had her heart set on Shanghai Wild Animal Park. We took a Didi car to the park.

Since the weather was crappy, it felt like we had the entire park to ourselves.

A circular flower bed with a wooden fence surrounds a small statue of a standing animal, possibly a squirrel, in the center. The flower bed is filled with green plants and small purple flowers. In the background, there is a larger sculpture of a pink octopus with a hat and sunglasses. The area is paved with stone tiles, and there are trees and a cloudy sky in the background. A red vehicle is parked on the right side.

The park is huge! Our first stop was a bus tour of some animal areas. We had 3 choices: A regular enclosed bus, a bus that was like a giant cage with a zoo employees feeding animals, or a smaller bus where we could feel the animals ourselves. We opted for the second choice.

The image shows a bus with a tiger stripe pattern parked on a wet surface, likely due to rain. The bus has a cage-like structure on its sides and is painted in orange and black stripes, resembling a tiger. In the background, there are trees and another similar bus partially visible. The scene appears to be outdoors on a rainy day.

A person is sitting inside a metal tram or transport vehicle with grated windows and metal benches. The interior is spacious, with several people seated along the sides. The person in the foreground is wearing a cap, a light-colored shirt, jeans, and white sneakers, and is carrying a patterned bag. The vehicle appears to be stationary, with a view of the outside through the windows.
Inside the bus

This was one of the most interesting experiences I’ve ever had. We saw some rather dangerous animals up close.

A person is holding a large carrot through a yellow metal fence, offering it to a bear on the other side. The bear is standing on a grassy area near a concrete path and a body of water.

You definitely don’t want to get too close to the side of the bus.

The image shows an emu peering through a yellow metal fence. The emu's head is visible, with its beak and feathers poking through the bars. The background includes a grassy area and a paved path, with trees and a cloudy sky in the distance. The fence has a transparent panel below the bars, and there are water droplets on the surface, suggesting recent rain.

The tigers were beautiful.

A tiger standing on its hind legs behind a metal cage, reaching up towards a piece of meat being offered through the bars. The background shows green foliage and a grassy area.

Looks innocent enough!

A tiger is seen behind a yellow metal fence, looking directly at the camera. The background is slightly blurred, showing greenery and a structure. The tiger's face is partially obscured by the bars, but its eyes and part of its nose are visible.

After the bus tour, we walked around other areas of the park to see more animals.

A person is standing in front of a sign at the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda Shanghai Base. The sign features large red Chinese characters and smaller English text. There are panda statues on either side of the sign, and the person is holding an umbrella. The background includes greenery and a wet pavement, suggesting it has been raining.

Giant pandas are always entertaining.

A panda is lying on its side on a wooden platform covered with bamboo leaves. The background features a rocky wall, and there is a red ball hanging above the panda.

Of course there were panda ice cream bars:

The image shows two intricately designed ice cream bars shaped like animals. The ice cream on the left is shaped like a panda holding a piece of bamboo, with detailed features in black and white. The ice cream on the right resembles a red panda, with a mix of brown, white, and pink colors, and is posed playfully. Both ice creams are held by wooden sticks, and two hands are visible holding them against a textured, reddish-brown background.

We had the chance to feed several animals:

A close-up image of a zebra eating a piece of carrot. The zebra's mouth is open, showing its teeth as it bites the carrot. In the background, another zebra is visible, and there is a wooden fence and a thatched-roof structure.

A person is feeding a capybara with leafy greens in an outdoor setting. The capybara is standing on artificial grass near a yellow hut with a thatched roof. The hut has cartoon animal illustrations and text in Chinese and English. A red plastic tub is visible next to the hut.

I was surprised to see this McDonalds inside the park:

The image shows the exterior of a McDonald's restaurant with a stone facade. The McDonald's logo is prominently displayed on the building and on a nearby wall. There are outdoor seating areas with tables and chairs, and the ground is wet, suggesting recent rain. The sky is overcast, and there are trees in the background.

One section of the park had some rides, including a Ferris Wheel and a few small coasters. We rode the Ferris Wheel and had it completely to ourselves.

A large Ferris wheel with colorful gondolas is set against a cloudy sky. The structure is surrounded by trees, and a person holding an umbrella is walking in the foreground. There are posters and signs near the base of the Ferris wheel.

In the afternoon, we bought tickets for the International Circus inside the park. It’s really more of a Russian circus.

A person is standing on a wet surface holding a black umbrella in front of a large, red and white circus tent. The tent has colorful decorations and a sign with cartoon characters above the entrance. The person is wearing a light-colored shirt, ripped jeans, and white sneakers. The sky is overcast, suggesting rainy weather.

The circus was incredibly entertaining.

The image shows a vibrant circus stage with a colorful, fantasy-themed backdrop. Several performers are suspended in the air on glowing carousel horses, while others are on the stage below, dressed in elaborate costumes. The stage is surrounded by red seating, and the ceiling is adorned with bright lights and decorations. The atmosphere is lively and magical, with a large red curtain and whimsical elements enhancing the scene.

Aerial performers are suspended in the air using red silks. One performer is doing a split while holding onto the silks, and the other is hanging upside down. The background is dark with colorful lighting, and there are illuminated signs with text in both English and another language. The atmosphere is theatrical and dramatic.

Acrobats, trapeze, horses…so many talented acts. Our day at Shanghai Wild Animal Park was so jam-packed.

The Bund

In the evening, we took a Didi car to the Bund, a waterfront area in the heart of Shanghai. It has a great viewing area of the modern high-rise buildings across the Huangpu River. Unfortunately, it was rainy and cloudy that night, so our view was a bit obstructed:

A nighttime cityscape featuring a brightly lit skyline with modern skyscrapers. The buildings are illuminated with colorful lights, and a prominent tower with a spherical structure is visible. The sky is overcast, and the city lights reflect on the water in the foreground.

But it was still a gorgeous site to see:

The image shows a nighttime cityscape of Shanghai, featuring the illuminated skyline of the Pudong district. Prominent is the Oriental Pearl Tower with its distinctive spherical design, surrounded by other modern skyscrapers. In the foreground, a brightly lit boat is sailing on the Huangpu River, reflecting colorful lights on the water. The sky is overcast, adding a misty ambiance to the scene.

On our side of the river, the buildings reminded me of Paris and London. The city has an interesting colonial history with British, French and American influence. I definitely see why Shanghai’s nickname is the “Paris of the East”.

A bustling nighttime city scene with a large crowd of people gathered on a wet street. The buildings are illuminated with warm lights, showcasing intricate architectural details. The sky is overcast, and several cars, including a yellow taxi, are visible on the road. The atmosphere is lively and vibrant.

On a Sunday evening, this area was brimming with excitement.

A bustling city street at night, with a large crowd of people gathered on the sidewalks. The street is lined with illuminated historic buildings, and cars are visible on the road. The scene is lively, with people taking photos and looking around. The buildings are lit with warm lights, creating a vibrant atmosphere.

We walked through the streets and narrow alleys, just taking it all in.

The image shows a narrow passageway decorated with numerous colorful hanging ornaments, primarily red, shaped like hearts and circles. A neon sign with Chinese characters is visible at the top. People are walking through the passage, and there is a stone wall with water and green plants on the right side. The atmosphere appears vibrant and festive.

The image shows a brick wall adorned with colorful neon signs in Chinese characters. The signs are in various colors, including pink, blue, yellow, and green. There are also neon designs resembling wings. Hanging from the ceiling are numerous heart-shaped decorations. A red fire extinguisher box is visible at the bottom of the wall.

The image shows a nighttime view of a shopping or commercial area with tall buildings on either side. The buildings are illuminated with lights, and there is a decorative archway with a circular design and Chinese characters at the top. A glass or metal canopy with a geometric pattern covers the area between the buildings. There are signs and advertisements visible on the buildings, and the sky is overcast.

The image shows a display of various ice cream and dessert items in a shop. On the top shelf, there are several jars with brown foil lids, possibly containing a type of dessert or yogurt. Below, there are colorful ice cream bars in various shapes, including a watermelon slice, a paw print, a swirl lollipop, and a panda face. The display is labeled with Chinese characters, and there are signs above indicating different flavors such as strawberry, sea salt, vanilla, and chocolate. The setup is bright and colorful, attracting attention to the variety of treats available.

The image shows a decorative frame adorned with large, colorful paper flowers in various shapes and colors, including red, pink, blue, yellow, and orange. Inside the frame, there are people sitting at a table in an outdoor dining area, with a restaurant visible in the background. The setting appears to be lively and vibrant, with a mix of natural and artificial lighting.

A bamboo steamer basket containing four colorful, animal-shaped buns. Each bun is designed to resemble a different animal, with distinct features like ears and eyes. The basket is part of a stack with yellow rims, and there are other dishes visible in the background.

Beijing vs. Shanghai

After spending a few days in each city, it was evident how different the two cities are. Beijing had a more formal, serious feel to it. Shanghai seemed more relaxed and fun. If I return to China on a future trip, I wouldn’t mind revisiting Shanghai to explore more of the city and surrounding area.

This is the final installment of my trip report. Let me know if you have questions in the comments. I am currently traveling, so my responses will be delayed.
