Like many of our readers, last year my husband became a proud owner of Capital One Venture X card (our affiliate link). Unfortunately, the 100k points offer is no longer available, and I personally doubt it will ever come back. But the current bonus still offers incredible value for many people.
One of the perks and the reason I’ve decided to renew the card is $300 annual travel credit, as long as you book through Capital One Venture X travel portal. It’s more restrictive compared to some other premium cards, but still fairly easy to take advantage of. My husband was approved on January 4th 2022, so I figured his $300 credit should have hit his account by now. But I was wrong.
First, if you want to check the status of your credit, you should log into your account, click on “Rewards”, then “Benefits”:
A week ago, this page showed a tracker indicating that we have used up our $300 credit for the first cardholder year, and that it would renew in January of 2023. Then the tracker disappeared, and it looked like the new credit was now available. As I’ve mentioned in my post on Monday, I need to purchase one-way tickets from St. Maarten to Saba. Since the price in the portal was identical to other websites, utilizing this credit would be a no-brainer.
But I’ve decided to call Capital One to make sure that the credit has actually reset. The rep knew exactly what I was talking about, and she informed me that the credit is not yet available. In fact, it would not reset until the annual fee was charged to our account. She told me that would happen on the 21st of January, and that the credit should be available a day or two after that. She also mentioned that when that happens, I should see a tracker indicating how much is currently used up (should say $0) and when the credit will reset again. Fortunately, I’m not in a real hurry to get the tickets. So for now we wait.
I imagine many of you are in the same boat as me, hence this post. I wouldn’t want anyone to jump the gun on booking via C1 portal before your new $300 credit is actually available.
Southwest flights are now bookable via Capital One portal over the phone (maybe)
When researching the info on the travel credit, I came across this Flyertalk thread. In it someone has mentioned that he/she was able to book a Southwest flight by calling Capital One. This could potentially be useful to those who are having a hard time utilizing this credit otherwise. As many of you know, Southwest travel credits no longer expire, so it could be a decent way to lock in future flights on Southwest. I haven’t tried doing it myself, and you may have to ask for a supervisor to accomplish this task.
By the way, several other Flyertalk users in that thread have confirmed they were also told that the annual fee has to hit the card before the credit will reset. So, I’m inclined to believe that the rep didn’t make up this info just to get rid of me. There is definitely a nuisance factor involved, but for me, the card is still a keeper for now, mainly due to generous Priority Pass benefits, 10k points upon renewal, plus $300 travel credit.

Do authorized users get their own cell phone protection on this card ? Or do claims from any card under the account count towards the 12 month limit
@Jobathan I wasn’t able to find a definitive answer on whether AU gets the same cell phone protection. My guess is Yes, but I don’t want to bet my life on it. I recommend calling Capital One to make sure. Ditto for claims.
Data point: I got the credit for booking flights which I ultimately canceled but the credit was not reversed.
@Audrey Thanks! I’ve seen others mention it as well, including that Flyertalk thread. Still, I would be reluctant to recommend it to others, as the situation may change tomorrow. But it’s good to know that if plans change, the credit likely won’t be clawed back.
Sounds generous if you don’t have to actually pay the AF before it posts!
@Pam I’m sure that’s why you don’t get the travel credit before the annual fee hits. It may still be possible to take advantage of it and then cancel, but I wouldn’t count on it. Plus, C1 says in the terms that it could take 1 or 2 billing cycles. Regardless, I fully intend to keep the card (for now) and pay the fee.
