Both my husband and I are happy new owners of Capital One Venture X cards. We’ve already used our $300 in annual travel credit on each card, and we are racking up miles that we plan to use on a future trip to Europe.
The other day, my husband was ready to book a vacation rental on Booking.com for a dudes weekend. He asked what card to use, and I told him to use his Capital One Venture X card in hopes that it would trigger the $200 vacation rental credit that the card has during its first year.
A few days later, I logged into his account to see if his payment from Booking.com triggered the $200 credit. Much to my surprise, his credit had already been applied for a prior transaction.
What Triggered the $200 Vacation Rental Credit?
It took me a bit to figure out why he already had the $200 credit processed last month. So as I looked through his possible transactions, it appears that our HOA bill triggered the credit. What a pleasant surprise!
I wondered if this was a mistake. But a quick internet search proved that others have also received the credit for HOA bills as well as regular hotel spending.
Since I have apartment rentals and regular hotel spend for my trip this summer, I am confident that my card’s $200 credit will easily be processed.
Between the $300 travel credit and the $200 vacation rental credit, the Venture X’s $395 annual fee is easily justified for my family. This card has been my favorite new card in years!

I actually booked an Airbnb wbd did NOT get the credit. I called, they said that they would look into it, and a few days later I had a line in my list of transactions of one-time credit for the $200

I’ve got one too. I helped my mother in law get a new apartment rental and I paid initial application fee to secure the unit she wanted using my X… it happened to be exact $200… that surprisingly triggered the credit. Probably the same logic as HOA.. both have to do with ‘housing’ thus they have to do with rental? it’s pretty generous categorization.
Nancy says
@tjp74 I’m glad the credit worked in that situation!

Yeah – I wouldn’t necessarily count on it. I actually did do a timeshare rental but because it was coded as “lodging” they refused to apply the credit. You’re at the whim of the coders. Will likely be a one year card for me – get my 100,000 points and run. Did not like that customer service refused to even look at doing a manual credit when you clearly have a purchase that fits the description but doesn’t trigger because of vague coding categories.

@David that’s a bummer. I’m a bit surprised, as others have reported getting the credit for normal hotel charges.
