Finally! Olympic Trials Event Rescheduled. Go, or Cancel?

Amongst all of my trips and events that were canceled or postponed, I was still waiting on one event: the USA Gymnastics Olympic Trials. I was supposed to go to St. Louis with my daughter this past June for a fun girls trip to see the event. Watching Simone Biles do her triple-double on the floor exercise in person would have been incredible!

But alas, the pandemic had other plans for us. I kept waiting for Ticketmaster to refund our tickets. But since USA Gymnastics marked the event as postponed instead of canceled, I had to wait until a new date was set.

Recently, I received an email from Ticketmaster with the new 2021 dates for the event. I have 30 days to decide if I want to keep the tickets for the new date or cancel and get a refund.

The Case for Going

When I first got the email from Ticketmaster, I jumped for joy. I quickly re-booked the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch for four nights on points. It’s only 8000 points per night. Combined with some Chase Ultimate Rewards points for flights, this trip is almost “free”.

In addition to the gymnastics events, my daughter and I could do a few other fun things in St. Louis. Plus, I could visit a college friend there.

The Case for Canceling

Our trip calendar for next year is quickly filling up. It might be too full already.

In addition to the trips we moved from this summer to next summer (Disney World and Cancun), our kids want to go to summer camp next year. My husband and I are 100% on board with this idea because we could potentially go on a short parents-only trip during that time.

Next year will also be my daughter’s last year in elementary school. I had already planned to pull her out of school on the week of her birthday for a special trip (and I won’t pull her out of school in middle school, so it’s her last year).

So now the existing trips plus the camps plus the birthday trip plus the gymnastics event add up to a lot of travel. While I love to travel, I’m not immune to travel burnout. Plus, if we decide to get a backyard pool, I want to be home enough over the summer to enjoy it.

How is your 2021 trip calendar looking so far? Is it full?
