Last week, I announced that I am now on “cash” kick, as in focusing on going after sign up bonuses that can buy me food. And I love food! I also mentioned that I applied for Amex Blue Cash cards in mine and my husband’s names, and that both went to pending status. So, I decided to wait it out. Few days after the application, I got a phone call from Amex rep. Apparently, she just wanted to verify my date of birth, address etc.
No questions were asked about all the new cards I added to my wallet within the last two years. The lady sounded chipper, and told me I was approved. I verified the sign-up bonus to make sure I would get $250, the main reason for the application. She said Yes, and we parted ways, in a virtual sense.
Three minutes later I got another phone call from, you guessed it, the same lady. Only this time she wanted to talk to my husband who wasn’t home at the time. Yep, she remembered me, it’s only been three minutes! The conversation was a bit strained, and she didn’t sound chipper anymore.
I’m pretty sure she put two and two together, and figured out the purpose of our applications. After all, why would we need two identical cards? Maybe I’m overthinking this whole thing. Either way, she left me her direct number and asked that my husband would call.
Needless to say, he just loves doing this sort of thing (insert sarcasm).

But the app wasn’t denied, and this wasn’t a reconsideration call, so he reluctantly agreed. Unfortunately, the lady wasn’t there by the time my husband got home from work. So, we called a regular line, big mistake. They transferred him a few times and he waited 30 minutes on the phone. Here is how the last conversation went:
Amex rep: Blah, blah, blah
My husband: Okie dokie (hangs up)
Me: You got approved?
My husband: Three to five days.
Me: Three to five days what?
My husband: Wrong department.
Me: So, do we need to call back or will they call us in three to five days?
My husband: Not sure (walks away)
I promise, I’m not making this up! This is how my husband communicates. He is a man of few words, and they don’t always make sense. I think he married me so I would talk for him, which I quite frequently do.
Well, the next day I checked his application status and it said “Canceled” What? I figured that they called my husband’s job and he told them to get lost. But he said he did no such thing. So, we called the lady, which is what we should have done to begin with, and he got approved. Phew!
What an ordeal. Honestly, if I knew this would be such a nuisance, I would probably only apply in my name. I have to be very careful as to how much I ask of my husband’s input on this whole Hobby business. He really, truly hates it, and only does it to make me happy. In the end, we should get $500 total out of this deal after spending only $2,000, and possibly more, depending on Amex offers. Not too shabby! Sure, there is work involved. But how can you beat the return, especially if you buy things you need anyway?
