Few Important Miles and Points Updates

September 18, 2015 By Leana 2 Comments

I’ve mentioned that now and again I’ll cover important news items that pertain to a middle-class family, so here we go:

  1. There is an award sale on Virgin Atlantic that ends September 23rd. The real value lies in booking economy awards from USA to London. For example, one-way economy ticket from Orlando to London costs 17K miles and $158 in  taxes. That’s actually pretty good, considering the same award costs 30K miles via all major American programs. You can book your tickets for next summer, and availability is usually excellent on most routes. Virgin Atlantic is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards, Amex Membership Rewards, SPG and Citi Thank You Program (with eligible cards like Citi Thank You Premier and Citi Prestige).  Check this page for all the info (h/t Pointscentric)
  2. Speaking of, here is a post on Pointscentric covering new 100K miles offer on Chase British Airways Visa. I actually planned to write something similar, but he did such a great job, now I don’t see the point. I agree with Ralph on the dangers of such high minimum spending requirements. This offer does pay me referral, but be aware, it comes with an annual fee. There is a non-affiliate link for 50K Avios where the fee is waived. Check my page “Best credit card deals for family” for more details.
  3. Details on new Amtrak credit cards issued by Bank of America as well as application links. Neither offer is hot IMO, but check it out anyway. Bank of America isn’t known for huge sign-up bonuses, and this one is fairly decent.
  4. $100 off $100+ Orbitz booking through September 30th.

P.S. I was finally able to successfully install Twitter widget on my blog! It only took me two years to figure it out. Check it out on the right side of my blog page. There will see my re-tweets with all the hot stories of the day. You can just click on the Twitter link to read them, easy as pie. Have a nice weekend!

If one were holding off on applying for a lot of cards, say in prep for a home loan, I think the 100k would be worth applying for to focus spend over the next year. 6 pts per dollar is solid.

Otherwise, I think 20k in spend could get you like 300k pts. Yuuuge Oportunity cost unless you are an MSer.

Cheapblackdad, I couldn’t agree with you more! You nailed it, this offer is good for those who can only apply for one card for the next 12 months. You forego too many potentially good offers otherwise. It certainly can make sense, but I would absolutely pass. That said, not everyone is like me.
