Ranting mood strikes again!
I have mentioned before that I felt compelled to call out certain bloggers in my posts a couple of times (though without the names). I assure you, it wasn’t to be obnoxious. Well, there is probably some of that! The truth is, since I started blogging close to 5 months ago, I have observed a LOT of unethical behavior.
The question I ask, when I see it: does it harm the readers? If not, I move on. Just like I would not impose my personal beliefs on my coworkers, I have no business telling bloggers how to collect their miles and points. If it does harm the readers, thats where I draw the line.
My assumption with this blog is that I will not be writing tomorrow for whatever reason. I want you to be aware of what goes on behind the scenes in this industry. How a few blatantly push inferior offers or take advantage of their readers in some other way. Did you know that some major blogs are owned by corporations with shareholders?
You are not just a customer to some extent, like with my blog. You are a customer to them, period. You will not see Sallie Mae or US bank Cash Plus cards listed there. But you will see Amex Blue Cash Preferred. I’ll let you guess why that is. Additionally, the treatment of some affiliate bloggers in this hobby borders on worship. People look to them for moral guidance, when they really shouldn’t.
And when a person hears how special they are for a thousandth time, they start to believe it. As a result, they start thinking that normal rules of the business world somehow don’t apply to them. That their blog is some sort of a noble quest, instead of what it truly is: a business, that also happens to be a labor of love.
Let me point finger at myself here. I should have never mentioned charity when talking about affiliate links. Don’t fall for it when you hear other bloggers talking about it either. There are only 2 things that should matter: integrity and content quality. In that order.
