On my recent trip to Guatemala, my daughter and I stayed at a beautiful Airbnb rental, Sacred Tree, in the small town of Santa Cruz La Laguna on Lake Atitlán.
Location/Getting There
From Antigua, we took a shuttle to Panajachel that we booked through Guatego. The drive is normally 2.5 hours, but our trip took a bit over three hours due to traffic. I recommend you take Dramamine or Bonine the night before because the roads are winding and bumpy.
On the ride there, we saw a lot of stray dogs on the highway as well as TONS of trash, despite the signs that said no dumping.
Lake Atitlán is the deepest lake in Central America (over 1000 feet deep in some areas) and is surrounded by 3 volcanoes. The lake has 11 small towns on its shores. Panajachel is the main hub to get to all of the towns surrounding Lake Atitlán. Our driver dropped us off near the boat dock where we would take a boat (lancha) to Santa Cruz La Laguna.
I was a little nervous that our luggage was going to fall off the boat:
The boat ride to Santa Cruz La Laguna was only about 10 minutes. From the town dock, we walked 5 minutes on this dirt path along the lake to Sacred Tree:

The Airbnb property looks just like the online photos:
The property has several small houses that face the lake. Our room, Aether, was the top level of the front yellow house.
My favorite thing about our room was the view from the balcony:
The property has a heated swimming pool and a sauna:
Our room had a king-size bed, bathroom, living area and kitchen:

The only downside to the open layout was that the shower had no privacy from the rest of the room. Thankfully, the toilet had its own door.
We ordered breakfast from the property chef each morning and ate it on the balcony. I had a traditional Guatemala breakfast (eggs, beans, tortillas, fried plantains) and my daughter had pancakes. Delicious!
On our last day, I splurged on a massage from a local that our host recommended. It was a bargain!
My daughter and I loved coming back to the property after our daily adventures to read on the dock and swing away the afternoon with the fabulous view:
Dining Near Sacred Tree
Santa Crua La Laguna is one of the smaller towns on Lake Atitlán, but there are still food choices available. A few houses down is the popular Free Cerveza hostel that has a different dinner option each night. There are also a few small hotel restaurants within walking distance on the lake as well as a few more choices if you take the steep walk up to the town center (we hired a tuk-tuk one night for that). In addition, the chef at Sacred Tree has a limited dinner menu that you can order to be delivered to your room.
Overall, the location of Sacred Tree and the views were simply spectacular, and I would stay there again on my next trip to Guatemala.
