Citi Adds AA as a 1:1 Transfer Partner

July 27, 2025 By Nancy 4 Comments

This is big news: Citi just added American Airlines as a 1:1 transfer partner!

While this move has been rumored for a while,  I didn’t actually believe it until it just happened. AA miles are incredibly valuable to my family since we live near an AA airport hub. I’ve found some great Web Special awards in the past, and I’d love to get my hands on more AA miles.

This makes me want to seriously reconsider the Citi Strata Elite card (non-affiliate link), which recently launched. This card is now available in branches with a 100k bonus or online with an 80k bonus.

Are you excited about this new transfer partner?

AA is an awful airline and I despise just about everything about them. They’re definitely above the LCCs but they are bottom of the barrel for mainstream legacy carriers. That aside…

I am thrilled by this news. I’ll take a direct flight on AA over a connection on another airline any day. Plus having a stash of AA miles opens up more options, which is never a bad thing. I didn’t think this would show up until 2026 when the Barclays relationship ended, so this is a pleasant surprise.

@projectx Yes, I’m surprised by the timing too!

Many more miles will be chasing award seats. Dynamic pricing was implemented and is being expanded to the partners. The partners are restricting the number of seats made available to AAdvantage. Except for that, this is great,

@Tony Kerrington Bah Humbug 🙂 Pricing is always going up, but so are bonuses thankfully.
