My family is traveling to Japan in 2025. Due to adding another person to our travel group, I had to rearrange flights, and now we are getting to Japan in three groups of two. My oldest son and his friend are flying out of San Francisco, and they need to fly from Dallas to San Francisco the night before. Would I have trouble getting them a hotel room since they’re not 21 years old?
Minimum Age to Book Hotel Room
Many hotels require you to be 21 years old to book a hotel room. Some vacation rentals require you to be even older (I’ve seen 25, even 30 as minimum age requirements on rentals I’ve booked before). I understand the policy is to prevent underage partying. But what about college students, military personnel and other young adults who legitimately need a place to stay?
My first choice of hotels for my son and his friend is Hyatt Regency SFO. I’ve stayed there twice before, and I know it’s very convenient to the airport. However, Hyatt’s minimum age to book a hotel is 21 at most locations. From the Hyatt website:
So, I went to Hyatt SFO’s website and did an online chat with an agent. They informed me that at this particular location, the minimum age is 18. Perfect!
I also discovered that there is a website to search for hotels that allow 18- to 20-year-olds to book: HotelCheckin18Plus.com
Have you had issues booking a hotel room for an 18- to 20-year-old in your family?

When Ì was 10 years old and flying alone, my connecting flight in Tokyo was canceled. All the passengers were directed to and provided bus transportation to the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa. I had no problem checking in! Of course, that was not 2024.

@Ryan WOW! Something like that would make the news today!

I booked my daughter hotel rooms when she was 18 and traveling with a friend (either 17 or 18) to go to a concert. I used Marriott hotels (maybe Courtyard as I recall) and had her booked under her name using a Marriott Chase Visa authorized user card under my account. I called the hotel to let them know but didn’t have a problem.
All depends on the hotel but suggest you contact several in the area, especially if you have status, explain the situation and see what can be done. Don’t be surprised if you have to guarantee it to your card but you can likely find a hotel that will accommodate them with no problem.
