Tutorial: Combining Hawaiian Airlines Miles with Spouse and Transferring to Alaska Airlines

October 29, 2024 By Nancy 2 Comments

A few months ago, both my husband and I applied for a Barclays Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard (non-affiliate link). The bonus is 70,000 miles after spending $2000 in the first 90 days ($99 annual fee).

We primarily got the card due to the Alaska Airlines/Hawaiian Airlines merger. And, since we both have the Hawaiian Airlines Mastercard, we can transfer Hawaiian miles between us with no fees.

I recently transferred my husband’s Hawaiian miles to my account, and then transferred all the miles to Alaska. It was very easy!

Combining Hawaiian Miles

Log into the Hawaiian Airlines account you want to take miles from.  On the left side of the screen, under HawaiianMiles, click on “Share Miles”.

This brings you to a screen where you can enter the recipient’s last name, HawaiianMiles account number and number of miles to transfer.

The miles were available in my Hawaiian account immediately after the transfer.

Transferring Hawaiian Miles to Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan

Transferring my combined Hawaiian miles to Alaska was also pretty straightforward. From the Hawaiian Airlines website on the left side HawaiianMiles menu, click on “Redeem Miles”.

Then, scroll down to to the box to transfer miles to Alaska’s Mileage Plan:

The system would only let me transfer miles in increments of 10. So, I have 4 orphaned Hawaiian miles. Oh well! After completing the transfer, the page said the transfer may take up to 72 hours. However, just a few minutes later, all of the miles were in my Alaska account. Done!

Why am I combining Hawaiian miles and transferring miles from Hawaiian Airlines to Alaska Airlines now?

According to reports, the Barclays Hawaiian Airlines credit cards will soon be discontinued. That also means that the ability to transfer Hawaiian miles between cardholders for free will presumably disappear. In addition, I need some Alaska miles to book a spring break award flight. I’m glad this process is quick and easy.
