My 4500-mile Award Flight, and Resource for Best Way to Book AA/Alaska Flights

August 22, 2024 By Nancy 2 Comments

Earlier this month, my son and I flew from Dallas to Denver for the weekend. I used to rely on British Airways Avios to book this short distance on American Airlines flights. Back in the day, this short flight used to cost just 4500 Avios. Over the years, the price of Avios awards has progressively increased.

Now, this same flight costs 12,000 Avios. Since AA has dynamic award pricing, using Avios may not be cheaper than using AA miles anymore.

However, I still have one great option for this flight: Alaska Airlines. This short-distance flight costs just 4500 Alaska miles each way in Economy. And, that’s exactly how I booked our flights to Denver for this recent trip. I have a few Alaska miles from the Bank of America Alaska Airlines credit card, plus Bilt points transfer to Alaska Airlines.

Best Way to Book AA and Alaska Flights with Avios

To be honest, finding the best deal on AA and Alaska award flights isn’t always easy. With new airlines now participating in the Avios program and different award charts, it’s hard to keep up.

Dan’s Deals published this Master Chart of the methods and costs to book AA and Alaska Airlines award flights, as well as the transfer partners to get these miles. It is a great resource, and I encourage you to bookmark it.

Transferred a lot of Amex miles to BA in 2023 to get 30% bonus and use for AA (since Bilt is only AA transfer partner and I don’t use that card). Worked out well and used for 4 AA flights plus J for 2 to Madrid on Iberia. However now AA, especially w web specials is cheaper than BA. However see on Google flights Alaska has great AA redemption in some markets so plan to get the B of A Alaska card (even though Alaska doesn’t fly to my home airport of CLT) just to redeem w AA

@Retired Gambler Sounds like a good plan. My husband and I already have the Alaska card and spent our bonuses so I’m relying on Bilt to replenish.
