• No foreign transaction fees
• $89 annual fee

This card has had a bonus of 80k in the recent past, but it usually has a bonus of 50k.

Using Lufthansa Miles and More

In addition to Lufthansa flights, you can use Lufthansa miles on Star Alliance members and Lufthansa’s European partners, which include Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Eurowings Discover and Swiss Airlines. See all airline partners here.

As a Lufthansa Miles and More member, you have access to Lufthansa first class award space a year ahead of time, instead of two weeks ahead of time if you try to book using a partner airline.

Families can pool together miles with Lufthansa’s Mileage Pooling program.

The Downsides to this card and program

• None of the bank award points (Chase, Citi, Amex, Capital One) transfer to Lufthansa Miles and More program, so it’s hard to add miles to your account for an award booking.
• Fees/fuel charges can be high when flying Lufthansa flights (~$350 to get to Europe). However, you can pay an extra 15k miles to offset those fees.
• Since the card earns 1X miles on most purchases, it’s not a great card for ongoing everyday spend.
• The companion ticket doesn’t save you much money due to taxes/fees.
• Barclays may not approve you for this card if you’ve opened 6 or more new credit cards in the past 24 months. See this post for more details.

I don’t recommend this card for newbies. If this is your first time opening a new credit card for travel, I recommend a keeper card with flexible points, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred or the Capital One Venture Rewards card.

However, for folks who have already had many credit cards and are looking for something new, this card could be a good fit.
