Laughing my way through The Reluctant Traveler show

August 18, 2023 By Nancy 1 Comment

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were scrolling through AppleTV+ because we ran out of stuff to watch on Netflix. I came across a few travel-related shows that might be of interest to my fellow travel enthusiasts.

The Reluctant Traveler

The Reluctant Traveler stars Eugene Levy, who you might know from Schitt’s Creek or American Pie. The opening of the show explains the premise: ““A great philosopher once said, ‘The world is a book. And those who don’t travel read only one page.’ Well, I gotta say, I’ve read a few pages, and I’m not crazy about the book.”

Eugene Levy is 75 years old and, surprisingly, hasn’t traveled a lot. He explains that he doesn’t like to be too hot or too cold or do things out of his comfort zone. I know people who share his feelings about travel!

But for this show, Levy visits places he’s never seen before and tries several new experiences. During Season 1’s eight episodes, Levy visits Costa Rica, Finland, Venice, Tokyo, Maldives, Lisbon, South Africa and Utah.

I’ve watched half of the shows so far, and I love Levy’s humor and sarcasm. Each episode also provides a good introduction to the location with a few ideas of things to do. For the Costa Rica episode, Levy actually stays in the same resort that Leana stayed in, Nayara Tented Camp (see her review here).

The Reluctant Traveler has already been renewed for Season 2, which will focus on destinations within Europe.

Hijack

Hijack is an action drama show that stars Idris Elba. I was hooked from the first episode, and we finished the series in just a few days. In this show, a plane flying from Dubai to London is hijacked. I really don’t want to say any more about it so I don’t give away any key details.

I loved the story line, but I also liked the aviation-related things on this show. Most of the show takes place on an airplane, and I found myself saying things like “This looks like the layout of a TAP Air Portugal plane” and “A plane this big would certainly have more flight attendants!”

If you’re like me and have trouble understanding British accents, I recommend you turn on the subtitles for this show. Hijack has seven episodes.

Have you watched either of these shows on AppleTV+? Do you have any other shows you recommend for travel enthusiasts?
