This morning, American Airlines announced several “new” international routes that will start in 2024. I put “new” in quotations because some of these routes existed pre-Pandemic or earlier and they are now being reinstated.
Philadelphia (PHL) to Copenhagen, Denmark (CPH) beginning June 6, 2024
Philadelphia (PHL) to Naples, Italy (NAP) beginning June 5, 2024 (Amalfi Coast area!!)
Philadelphia (PHL) to Nice, France (NCE) beginning May 6, 2024
Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) to Barcelona, Spain (BCN) beginning June 5, 2024
Chicago (ORD) to Venice, Italy (VCE) beginning June 5, 2024
American Airlines also announced some expanded seasonal and year-round service. I’m most excited about DFW to Rome moving to year-round instead of just the summer. You can see all of the new flight schedules here.
Today, Aer Lingus also announced some “new” routes for 2024 between Dublin and Minneapolis/St. Paul and Denver.
Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) to Dublin (DUB) beginning April 29, 2024
Denver (DEN) to Dublin (DUB) beginning may 17 2024.
You can see the full press release from Aer Lingus here.
Why I’m Excited
These route expansions just mean more opportunities for my family to fly to Europe using miles and points! I love having more routing options to cross the pond from DFW. I’m even excited about the Denver route, as Denver is an easy hop from DFW.
I don’t know about you, but I’m really excited to return to Europe again and again. I guess I blame the pandemic for taking away travel for a while. But, I’m ready to keep exploring!
Are you excited about any of these new airline routes to Europe?

While more routes are better than less my excitement is mitigated by some factors:
These are all to Europe and AA is adding nothing to Asia.
American is ridiculously tightfisted about offering premium cabin award space. They’d squeeze a silver dollar until the eagle screams and that’s a big turnoff.
They somehow forget to mention which routes are being killed off to facilitate these new ones.I’ve been bitten by AA’s cancellation of service before so I’m a bit wary of the hoopla hiding the shortcomings.
AA is also crazy stingy on confirmed upgrade certificate availability on paid tickets. For example, I can’t find upgrade space using my EXP loyalty points certificates for pretty much all on May next year to London on a $1200+ ticket with American offering around a dozen flights a day from various cities.
I guess more cities means hypothetically more choices which is good if people understand the drawbacks as well.

@Christian All valid points. I’ve only booked Economy award flights on AA but I bet those premium cabins are hard to find at a reasonable price.
