It’s been a few years since I’ve talked about this taboo subject on the blog: Money! How do Leana and I make money from this blog? In the past week, a few readers have asked me this question, so it’s time to talk about it again.
Two main sources of revenue
Miles for Family has two main income streams: ad revenue (from page views/blog traffic) and credit card affiliate links (from our partner site here).
Ad Revenue: BoardingArea.com handles all of the advertising that is on our site. They make sure that there are no offensive or inappropriate ads and look for new advertising opportunities.
Credit Cards: If you sign up for a new credit card through our links, we (usually) get a commission that comes from the credit card company. I say usually because not all of our links are affiliate links. Our page tries to share the best current offer for a card, and sometimes it’s not the one that pays us.
We are not credit card pushers. We never want anyone to sign up for a credit card if they can’t pay off the balance in full every month. I don’t want anyone to go in debt to get miles and points. No, no, no! If you meet us in person (and a few of you have who are local to us), we won’t be pushing you to sign up for a credit card over lunch.
However, the reality is that the reason we personally earn and burn so many miles and points is because we sign up for several new credit cards every year. We don’t just have one credit card that we put all of our spending on. We rely on new credit card sign-up bonuses for big deposits of miles and points.
How you can support Miles for Family
We appreciate each and every reader! Here are some ways you can support Miles for Family:
- If you decide to get a new credit card, use our credit card affiliate links instead of applying directly through the bank or instead of Googling for an application link.
- Consider disabling your Ad Blocker when you read our site (here is a tutorial of how to do that on Google Chrome).
- Subscribe to our posts through the blog and follow us on Social Media.
- Share our posts with your friends and family!
- Comment on our posts with your thoughts and questions.
Thank you!

I used to try and click through your links when applying for credit cards since I actually appreciate your take on family travel, however since you guys no longer publish entire posts through the rss feeder, I felt that your blog was being too controlled by the banks and my last three cards that my spouse and I applied for I have chosen not to click through from your site. I hope that you will continue to publish great content though.

@Lisa Thanks for reading! I don’t like the RSS change either, and I’m hoping the rule is relaxed sometime soon.

I appreciate the blogs which share how we can use miles and points to make travel more affordable and enjoyable for more people and widen our exposure to the world.
And it’s good that readers/site users know how a site makes money and how it operates so people can consider more information.
For all the criticism miles and points sites — particularly the US ones — get for selling credit/charge cards, not always genuinely out of concern of the risk of too many US consumers not being the best positioned to manage credit in a way that reduces their costs for spending or is otherwise financially healthy, we should also keep in mind that it’s these kind of cards that really have made it possible for a lot of people to do and do more of that which many of us enjoy and provides opportunities with friends and family that wouldn’t otherwise be possible to the same extent and in the same ways.
Advertising and bank card revenue support information sharing and even the acquisition of experiences and knowledge that can be shared. That’s not an entirely bad thing, even as there are a mix of people — some genuinely concerned but others just opportunistic, jealous or otherwise insecure types — who do have concerns about “how can we trust” a site in the miles and point space.
Keep the passion for getting what you can out of the miles and points space, and thanks for sharing how it works for you and may also work for others.
Randy Petersen and Boardingarea.com have made a lot of good things possible for a lot of people. And part of that includes how to run up online revenue and use it to support information sharing in this space.
