A few weeks ago when we asked readers what content you’d like to see more of on this blog, many of you requested more posts about booking award flights. Your wish is my command! Last week, I posted a tutorial about how to use BA Avios to book AA flights. This week, I want to just share one piece of advice and show you some award availability I’m seeing right now.
My #1 tip: Start looking for award availability early! I can’t emphasize this enough. Right now, you should be looking for award flights for next summer. Yes, that’s Summer 2024 I’m talking about!
Most domestic airlines now have flights available to book through mid- to late-June 2024. Some international airlines, like Air France and Iberia, are already selling flights through mid-July 2024. Now is the time to start looking for your Summer 2024 trip.
Award Availability I’m Seeing
Yesterday, I poked around the internet to see what award availability I see for June/July 2024. Here are some examples I saw (keep in mind that award availability changes by the minute, so these may or may not be available currently).
Nontstop Condor Airlines flights from Seattle to Frankfurt one-way, 25k Economy – 55k Business (Book with Alaska Air miles), June 19, 4 seats per class.
Economy DFW to Amsterdam with Air France/KLM Flying Blue miles for as low as 19,500 miles one-way, available first week of July 2024. You can transfer points to Flying Blue program from Chase, Capital One, Amex, Bilt, Citi and Marriott. (Note: There is a 20% transfer bonus from Capital One to Flying Blue through 7/31/23).
I see a lot of availability on across all classes on Iberia between NYC and Madrid in both directions for many dates in July 2024. You can also book these using British Airways Avios or transfer from Chase and Amex. For slightly more miles, you can fly from Madrid to Chicago and Dallas.
American Airlines between LAX and Tokyo both ways nonstop Economy 35k each way in mid-June:
To/from West Coast of USA to Hawaii on AA and Alaska using BA Avios in late May and June (13k Avios or 20-25 AA/Alaska air miles):
Are you planning Summer 2024 award flights? Are you finding the award flights you want?

SARA PUGH says
As always, thank you for the tips! I’m waiting for availability for international flights in November of 2024 as my friend and I booked a cruise that starts in Istanbul and ends in Venice. It’s going to be a huge challenge for us to get there and back from Oregon and St. Louis respectively. Especially as neither of us has traveled internationally before! Much appreciate all the tips and hints and directions you provide.
