Barbados: My unexpected favorite port stop

Out of all 9 islands that I visited on my Southern Caribbean cruise, Barbados turned out to be my favorite one. There was something special about Barbados that started with the colorful murals at port:

The port had the best assortment of shops, and the people that I met in Barbados had this great sense of pride for their country.

I booked an excursion through Royal Caribbean that visited Welchman Hall Gully and Batts Rock Beach.

Welchman Hall Gully

When I booked this tour, I didn’t really know what Welchman Hall Gully was. The description said there were monkeys there, and that was good enough for me.

The gully is a collapsed cave that contains a plethora of plants and animals. I loved seeing the monkeys roaming freely here.

Our guide took us through the paved path and showed us numerous fruit trees and unusual insects. I’m not a huge flora and fauna  fanatic, but this tour was very interesting.

Millipedes galore

I highly recommend the guided tour instead of the self-guided tour. There are so many things our guide pointed out that weren’t on on the signs.

Batts Rock Beach

Next, our bus dropped us off at Batts Rock beach. Wowza, what a gorgeous beach!

This beach was practically deserted! It was a bit rocky on one side, but the other side had a sandier, softer bottom.

Batts Rock Beach has a playground, restroom facility and a restaurant. The restaurant is not the typical beach bar, it’s more of a fancier joint. I rented a lounge chair for $10.

Rihanna’s House

The people of Barbados are so proud of their native superstar, Rihanna. She has her own street:

Our bus driver took us down Rihanna Drive to see Rihanna’s childhood home:

Final Thoughts

Barbados surprised me in a good way. I got the feeling that I only barely scratched the surface of what Barbados has to offer. I’d love to return for a land vacation to see other sites, like Harrison’s Cave and the St. Nicholas Abbey Heritage Railway. Plus, there are other beaches I’d love to explore.

Have you been to Barbados?

It’s been 30 years since I visited Barbados but it’s still my favorite island. The people, the topography, the food, and the pleasant low key atmosphere made for a lovely stay.
