I mentioned last Friday that the American Express Green Card has a new higher welcome offer with 60k points. Let’s take a look.
Amex Green Card 60k + $200
The American Express Green Card currently has an elevated welcome bonus of 60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $3000 in the first three months.
- 20% back on travel and transit during first 6 months, up to $200 in credit
- 3X points on travel
- 3X points on transit including trains, taxis, ride share apps, tolls, parking, buses and subways
- 3X points on restaurants
- $189 CLEAR Plus travel credit annually
- $100 LoungeBuddy credit annually
- Trip delay insurance
- No foreign transaction fees
- $150 annual fee
Why get this card?
If you’ve never had an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards points, this card is a good starting point. The annual fee of $150 is less than the Amex Gold ($250) and Amex Platinum cards ($695). Plus, the required spending for the bonus is lower than both of those cards.
If you get a CLEAR Plus membership or LoungeBuddy membership or charge any travel and transit during the first 6 months, you’ll likely receive statement credits that wipe out your annual fee.
Membership Rewards are a flexible currency. You can book travel with the points, or transfer to travel partners including:
- British Airways
- Delta
- Air France/KLM
- Iberia
- Virgin Atlantic and more!
Keep in mind that Amex has a “once per lifetime” rule for cards. If you’ve ever owned this card before, you are not eligible for the bonus.

Despite this being an all time high offer, I’m having a hard time getting excited about it. All of the benefits, including the bonus multipliers, are found on plenty of other cards.
And while the app will process as a charge card, meaning, if your Amex credit card slots (of five) are already maxed out, you’ll get an approval. However, strangely enough Amex will treat it like a credit card, meaning it takes up one of those slots. I guess it’s a round about way to get a 6th “credit card”. But it’s also a personal card which counts against your 5/24, and I’m 6 weeks away from falling below that.
Despite all that… it’s still tempting!

@projectx Interesting point about it potentially filling a 6th card slot! I don’t care so much about the benefits, I just want the bonus points. 🙂
