The 1820 Society on the Disney Wish

April 6, 2023 By Nancy 1 Comment

On our Disney cruise last month on the Disney Wish, my oldest son (age 18) was too old for the kid/teen clubs but too young to really enjoy the 21+ clubs. He is still a senior in high school, and not surprisingly, he didn’t want to spend his whole cruise with his parents. Thankfully, he got to have his own fun with a similar crowd in the 1820 Society on the Disney Wish.

After turning 18, guests are no longer allowed in the teen clubs for legal reasons. This puts a real damper on the fun for high school seniors and early college students. To fill in the gap for the 18-20 age group, Disney Cruise Line created the 1820 Society.

On most DCL ships, the 1820 Society does not have its own meeting space. However, on the Disney Wish, part of the Vibe teen club can be sectioned off for just the 18-20 crowd. This section is called the Hideaway, and it’s where the 1820 Society has its first meet-up on the first night of the cruise.

The 1820 Society meet-up was listed in the DCL app. During the initial meetup, everyone introduced themselves. The participants created a group chat and made plans for the rest of the cruise.

The DCL app listed at least one 1820 Society meetup every day, usually a lunch meet-up or a late-night meet-up. However, on our cruise, the young adults also met up for other things like Bingo, the Aqua Mouse ride and character photos.

I love that Disney Cruise Line organizes this group. DCL really does cater to all ages. The only other cruise line I’ve seen with something similar is Princess Cruise with its Club 1820.

My family has now experienced all of the kids clubs on Disney Cruise Line from the nursery to the Oceaneer Club/Lab to the Edge tween club to the Vibe teen club to the 1820 Society. Time flies!

Is Disney Cruise Line the Best for Ages 18-20?

I wouldn’t necessarily say that Disney Cruise Line is the best line for this age group. Certainly, having the 1820 Society is a huge plus. However, on other cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival, it’s fairly easy to meet other cruisers via social media before the cruise. It just takes a bit more initiative.

Have you cruised with a young adult in the 18-20 age range? What did they enjoy doing on board?
