Get a Southwest Companion Pass with One Credit Card Sign-up!

February 7, 2023 By Nancy 8 Comments

Through March 13, 2023, all three personal Chase Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards credit cards have a new welcome incentive that includes a companion pass! Let’s take a look at the details.

Companion Pass with One Credit Card

A Southwest Airlines companion pass is a valuable tool for travelers. With this pass, your companion flies for free with you (but must pay taxes which are $5.60 for domestic flights). Your companion flies free whether you use cash or points to book your flight.

In the past, my husband and I have both earned Southwest companion passes. Because we have five in our family, getting two people for free helped us travel more often and for less money/points.

This special offer companion pass is valid through 2/28/24. The offer also includes 30,000 bonus points. To get both the points and the companion pass, you must be approved for one of the personal cards and spend $4000 within the first 3 months.

Note: These cards are subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule. See this post. You can only own one personal Southwest credit card at a time. You are not eligible for the bonus if you have received a bonus on any of these personal cards in the past 24 months.

My Thoughts

This is a great opportunity to get a companion pass quickly. If you complete the spending requirements soon, you will have almost a year to utilize that companion pass.

However, if you own a small business, you might be better going for the “regular” companion pass. Why? A companion pass earned by getting 135,000 points a year will last for the current year plus the following calendar year. If you own a small business, you can get the Chase Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Performance Business Card (currently has 80k bonus points). Then later in March, the personal cards will likely return to 50k bonus points. The combination of those two cards will get you a regular companion pass that will last for almost two years instead of one year.

I received 30,000 sign up points on April 11, 2021. I cancelled my card on February 2022. This offer ends on 3/13/2023. Can I get the card now and not spend the 4000 until March so they appear on my closing statement in April? My husband missed out on the last Companion Ticket offer because we reached the amount needed for it in December and 50000 posted in December 2021 and the other 50000 posted in January 2022 and there was no way for us to reach 125000 before 2022 ended. We were bummed so I’m trying to be very careful with the dates now. Please advice. Thank you!

@Evelyn That’s a good question. I don’t think Chase would approve you right now for the card since it’s been less than 24 months since you received the bonus. 🙁 At least that’s my understanding.

Nice! Does the card holder have to be one of the passengers flying in order to utilize a companion pass for a second passenger?

@Peter yes, the companion pass will be issued to the card holder, and that person must be flying.
