Making more travel memories thanks to miles and points
My family has an exciting year of travel planned. In fact, I’m currently in Miami with two of my kids and we’re about to take a cruise. We used miles for our flights, points for our pre-cruise hotel and I even got an (almost) free cruise thanks to hotel status matching!
We’ve got more exciting travel plans for the rest of the year using miles and points, including:
- Flights to/from Florida for spring break
- Business class lie-flat seats for flights to/from Europe
- Hotel in Venice, Italy
- Flights and Airbnb in Puerto Rico
- Flights and hotel in Colorado
- Flights/hotel in Chicago
How do we have miles and points to do all of this? It’s not because we travel so much that we earn miles from paid flights. It’s also not because we spend a ridiculous amount of money on our credit cards every month.
The main reason we accumulate so many miles and points is because we open up new credit cards when they offer a high sign-up bonus. Even if my husband and I open just 2-3 new cards a year, we can easily get 300,000+ miles and points. We don’t go in debt because we only charge what we can pay off every month.
If you haven’t opened up a new credit card in the past few years, you’re missing out on some great bonuses you can use for travel!
Best Credit Card Deals
You can see all the credit cards in our affiliate network here. A few of my go-to favorites (and not all of these are in our affiliate network, but we always share the hot deals regardless):
Capital One Venture Rewards: It doesn’t get easier than this! Earn 2X miles on all purchases, and erase travel expenses from your credit card statement with miles. Current bonus is 75,000 miles!
Chase Ink Business Cash and Chase Ink Business Unlimited: If you own a small business, you may qualify for a business credit card to earn even more miles and points! These cards currently have 90,000 bonus points.

We’re doing a long weekend at the Hilton in Puerto Vallarta next month, 2 weeks in Central and Southern France in May, then a week in the Amalfi coast in Italy in October……

Only trips I’ve actually booked for this year are San Francisco and Cancun (using points for the hotels and flights).
We are trying to decide on a really big trip for the summer but can’t decide where exactly. There are a few other low key trips I’m tossing around for the rest of the year, but nothing firm yet. I’ve noticed I get kind of ancy when I don’t have a bunch of trips booked lol

@ Tammie sounds exciting!

Any idea how to get approved for a Venture as a SAHM? I received a pre approval two years ago and was denied. My husband received it no problem. I’ve never been rejected except by Venture as a SAHM using his income in my entire life. My credit score is 813. I seem to remember checking: Other on the application under income.
Leana says
Michelle, Capital One cards are difficult to get approved for, period. It likely has nothing to do with the fact that you are SAHM. You are allowed to include his income on applications, so you are doing it correctly. I recommend trying again at some point in the future. I wish I could give you some secret formula, alas…
Nancy says
@michelle I always use household total income on my apps
