After 4 years of getting the dreaded Amex pop-up box when I applied for any American Express card, my luck finally changed.
Finally Approved for Amex Card!
My last Amex approval was in 2018. I’ve tried at least 3 times since then to get a new Amex card, but I was always denied. It’s likely because in my earlier days of traveling, I spent just enough to earn the sign-up bonus and frequently cancelled cards after the first year. Amex does not like that behavior because I wasn’t generating enough profit for the bank.
Well, I’ve been putting more spending on my current Amex Hilton card over the past two years. I’ve spent around $9k on it. Then recently, I received an email from Amex inviting me to apply for the business version of the card. I’ve never had the card before. I thought, why not try?
Much to my surprise, I was approved!

@Caveman I have a cruise to pay off that will take care of the first hurdle. Not sure I will meet the other thresholds.
I was in “pop up” jail for a long time, i.e., when I apply I get a message saying I am not entitled to earn the sign up bonus due to past behavior with Amex. (Over the years I have cancelled many Amex cards after one year). I tried putting spend on my existing cards and but this did not seem to help. I actually applied for two Amex cards after getting the pop up saying I was not eligible for the bonus (I did this to get my wife the referral bonus). I met the minimum spend on each card but did not get a bonus as the pop up notice had said. I really wanted to get the Amex Delta Reserve 125k offer and tried at least six times over two years and got the pop up every time. Then, about a month ago, I tried one more time and was approved. My 125 bonus in SkyMiles just posted. Just this week I was approved for the Amex Blue Cash Preferred card without getting the pop up. So happy to be out of pop up jail.
