This past Thanksgiving week, we scrapped our plans for another visit to North Captiva Island (heavily hit by hurricane) and instead rented a house on vrbo in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. These two places could not be more different, yet we still accomplished our intended goal.
The cabin
Our cabin (vrbo link) was in a somewhat isolated area surrounded by woods. There are more cabins in the “neighborhood”, but none were too close.
It was already decked out for Christmas.
The downstairs had 2 bedrooms with king beds and ensuite bathrooms.
The upstairs loft had two sets of bunk beds, plus a sofa and tv area.
The back deck had a hot tub along with the outdoor living area.
Outside of the cabin, there were swings, hammocks, horseshoes, corn hole and a fire pit.
Why it was practically perfect
Since my sister was traveling with us, she got the other bedroom and the kids all slept upstairs. This forced them to spend time together. And, we were shocked at how well they got along.
My kids played video games together. All six of us played Bingo every day (with Bingo cards from Amazon, a phone app and prizes) as well as Uno. My oldest son even suggested buying a puzzle to work on. I was shocked that my boys actually worked on this puzzle together and completed it!
The first night, we hung out around the fire pit, roasting s’mores and just marveling at the flames.
Unfortunately, it rained the next few days, so our outside activities were limited. We went into town for lunch one day and explored a few of the gift shops.
But mostly, we just stayed in the cabin and spent time with each other. Miraculously, there were no major squabbles among my kids. Go figure, they finally start to get along just as my oldest is about to move out for college.
Bottom Line
This simple road trip with a vrbo rental was just what we needed for the holiday. The somewhat remote location and shared sleeping area fostered some bonding time with my kids. And for that, I’m very thankful.
