Finally! I waited almost 5 months for this!

November 1, 2022 By Nancy 5 Comments

Today is the day I finally received my travel insurance payment! It’s been so long that I almost forgot about it.

Background

Since I had a lot of travel after lockdowns, my family got an annual travel insurance plan from September 2021-August 2022. It cost around $400 for the year and was with Travel Insured International.  The base plan covered the following for all trips during the year:

The plan did not cover trip cancellation, but I could add that on to individual trips for an additional cost.

Why did I buy this plan instead of relying on travel insurance through my credit card? Well, I use multiple credit cards and gift cards throughout the year to pay for vacations. Not all of them have insurance, and it’s difficult to keep track of which ones I use for each trip. I always buy extra insurance for cruises and international trips. I’d rather be over-insured than under-insured.

The Claim

In May, I visited the medical center on my cruise. The bill was almost $200. I filed a claim immediately.

In the past, I’ve received reimbursement from travel insurance a few days later. A visit to a cruise ship medical facility is a pretty standard thing that is covered.

But this time, I waited. And waited. I contacted the insurance company, only to receive automated emails. I also tried calling, but the wait times were too long and I gave up.

Well, today is my lucky day. After 5 1/2 months, I finally received the money from my claim! The wait time was ridiculous, but I suppose this is part of the “new normal” with the large number of pandemic travel claims plus staffing shortages.

A New Policy

My family has a lot of travel planned in 2023, so I do plan on getting another annual travel insurance policy soon. I’m not sure I will get one through Travel Insured International again due to the long wait time. However, I’m not sure other companies have shorter claim times right now anyway. Regardless, I will shop around a bit.

For those that have filed travel insurance claims this year, how long was your wait?

I’m also waiting for months for them to process my claim. I already sent them all the info they need. They used to be much quicker.
