Current U.S. Passport Processing Times and My Experience

August 31, 2022 By Nancy 11 Comments

My oldest son’s passport was set to expire next year, and we had to strategically plan his passport renewal between two international trips. Luckily, his passport came back faster than we anticipated.

The U.S. Department of State website says that processing time is 5-7 weeks with the expedited surcharge and 8-11 weeks for routine processing.

My son had to go in-person to our local library since this is his first passport as an adult. He paid for the routine processing time, not expedited. His appointment was on July 31, and we just received his passport yesterday. It took 4 weeks and 2 days. Not too shabby! (Especially compared to the 18-week processing time during the pandemic.)

If you’re waiting to get your passport renewed, don’t count on it being processed faster than the website says. This was just our experience. Allow yourself plenty of time so that you don’t have to stress over your passport’s arrival before your trip. In addition, check your passport expiration dates now. Many countries require an expiration date of 6 months past your trip.

Who has renewed a passport recently, and what was your timeline?

3 weeks with expedited after they received the application. It took 3-4 days from local USPS office to their office too.

4 weeks for my son and 4 weeks for me. Both expedited – worth the extra $$ for peace of mind.

I tried out the online passport renewal way (https://www.dansdeals.com/points-travel/finally-passports-will-soon-renewable-online/), and it worked out great! I was able to take photo on my phone. I think I submitted a request end of February, got first email beginning of March, then further information to renew online end of March. I got the new passport in the mail in mid April. It was so much easier than going to the post office and worrying about the documents not mailing over!

@Elena That’s great to hear! I’ve always hated mailing in documents.

New issue took 10 weeks from May 23rd acceptance at processing facility. GE only took a week from new application to interview.

Fastest I’ve ever gotten it was three days from initial enrollment through interview. My experiences are FAR from the norm.
