Just Approved for Citi AAdvantage Platinum with 75k Bonus!

June 17, 2022 By Nancy 12 Comments

Citi just increased the sign-up bonus on its Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard to 75k AA miles. The normal offer is 60k miles. This offer is not yet reflected in my affiliate link, but you can go to this direct link. This limited-time offer expires on July 13, 2022.

Details on Offer

  • Spend $3500 in the first four months to get 75k AA miles
  • Annual fee of $99 is waived the first year
  • 2X miles on AA purchases
  • 2X miles at restaurants and gas stations
  • Free checked baggage for you and four traveling companions
  • Preferred boarding on AA flights

Note: American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® account in the past 48 months. This is important! If you’ve had this card before, check on the date of your bonus.

Another Offer

There is also a different offer that combines a statement credit plus miles.

  • Get $400 of statement credits on AA purchases within the first 6 months
  • Get 30k AA miles after spending $1500 in the first three months

I was Approved!

Today, I was approved for this card! My approval included a temporary card number to use until my card arrives. I’ve had this card twice in the past, but it’s been more than 48 months since I’ve received a bonus.

I live near an AA hub, and I’ve had good luck using AA miles for domestic flights. AA Web Special awards also come in handy.

Nancy, 3 family members applied & all 3 required speaking first with Citi prior to approval. Did you go thru this extra security check first, too? Thanks

Will that be once in every 48 mo bonus for the Citi Business as well? Separately from this card AAdvatage? Recently AA has been tighten up and shutdown miles. Will Barclay side of credit card have the same 48 rules? Or regardless of the issuer, whether Citi Bank or Barclay, AA won’t be pleased with accumulation of AA miles from 4 different credit card (2 biz + 2 cc)? Thanks for your help, Nancy.

@Agnes the 48-month rule is separate for every AAdvantage card type. However, Citi will only approve you for 2 cards every 65 days (or 1 card every 8 days). These rules don’t apply to the Barclay versions. I’ve accumulated miles with several AA cards at the same time (business, personal, both Citi and Barclay) and haven’t had any issues with AA.

@Nancy – Oops, I’ll have some sauce with that foot in my mouth. Thanks for the correction.

@Christian No worries at all! These rules are complicated and constantly changing.

Is the 48 months based on when you last opened or closed the card?

@milespointsbonusesDan It’s based on the date you last received the miles bonus.

Either. Just be careful that you have the 48 months covered with at least an extra month for wiggle room. I’m not eligible again until late this year. I previously made the mistake of applying for the card when I thought I had hit 48 months but I was a little short. I was approved for the card and got it but wasn’t eligible for the signup bonus and my 48 month clock was reset. Live and learn, my friend.

@Christian I believe the 48-month rule for the AA cards is different from the 24-month rule on the Citi ThankYou family of cards in that it doesn’t matter when you close the account, it only matters when you last received a sign-up bonus. It’s confusing for sure!

If I currently have a Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite MasterCard which was opened 8 years ago, can I apply for another one and get the 75k bonus?

Yes. Just don’t close your current one until you’ve gotten the new card. Otherwise you’re sitting on two annual fees and if you close one later the 48 month open/close clock restarts so it would be 48 months after that before you’d be eligible for the signup bonus again.
