Is This the Transfer Bonus I’ve Been Waiting For?

Update: Some offers have changed. See the current credit card offers here.

From time to time, banks and individual airlines and hotels offer transfer bonuses when you transfer from one miles currency to another. As I mentioned a few weeks ago (see this post), I don’t transfer during these deals unless I have an imminent award booking that I know can benefit from the transfer bonus.

However, new transfer bonuses are always just around the corner. Did I hit the jackpot with Chase’s new transfer bonus offers?

Chase Transfer Bonuses to British Airways and Marriott

This week, Chase announced a 30% transfer bonus to British Airways Avios (through July 31) and a 50% transfer bonus to Marriott (through August 19). I’m not very excited about the Marriott bonus, as I still think transferring to Hyatt is a better deal. But, the BA transfer bonus does excite me.

In the past, I’ve used BA Avios to book award flights on American Airlines flights. From Dallas, I can fly to Orlando for 9000 miles each way. Of course, AA must have the MileSAAver award space in order to use BA Avios.

For international travel, BA Avios are a versatile currency. For starters, you can transfer your Avios among British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Qatar (all use Avios currency). In order to transfer, your accounts must be at least 90 days old. These partners all have various flights with decent award cost and availability from the U.S. to Europe. Many hobbyists make use of the 34,000-mile business class award ticket on Iberia from Chicago to Madrid. See this post on OMAAT for the best uses of BA Avios.

I’m in the middle of planning flights to Europe for next summer, and I’m certainly looking at some options using Avios. If the right flight becomes available, you can bet that I will take advantage of this transfer bonus. I love that the offer is good for two months.

100k Offers on Avios Credit Cards

Chase offers co-branded credit cards for British Airways, Aer Lingus and Iberia. Currently, the bonus for each of these cards is 100,000 miles after spending $5000 in the first three months.
