During my family’s recent spring break road trip, we stopped in San Antonio, Texas. This city isn’t new to us, but it’s our favorite city in Texas to visit. Here are some of our favorite family attractions in San Antonio.
The River Walk
The San Antonio River weaves its way through downtown, and the River Walk is the main attraction of the city. Shops, restaurants and gorgeous architecture surround the River Walk. Learn about the history of the River Walk on a boat tour, and listen to a Mariachi band while eating at the historic Casa Rio restaurant.
The Alamo
Remember the Alamo? It’s conveniently located steps from the River Walk. Entrance is free, but you must make an online reservation.
SeaWorld San Antonio
SeaWorld San Antonio has marine animals, shows and rides galore! When my kids were younger, they loved the Sesame Street Bay of Play area.
Six Flags Fiesta Texas
Six Flags Fiesta Texas has all the rides to thrill you (or make you toss your cookies). It’s not my cup of tea, but my boys love it.
Tower of the Americas
The Tower of the Americas provides a panoramic view of the city. Built for the 1968 World’s Fair, it offers dining and a 4-D theatre show inside.
Historic Market Square (El Mercado)
Historic Market Square, also known as El Mercado, is the largest Mexican market in the United States. Shop from over 100 local vendors and stay for the food and entertainment. I love seeing all the colors in this market.
San Antonio Missions National Historical Park
The Alamo isn’t the only mission in town. See more history at San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas.
Natural Bridge Caverns and Wildlife Park
The Natural Bridge Caverns were discovered by college students in 1960. Located about 30 minutes north of the city, a tour of these caves is worth the drive. The nearby Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch is a drive-through animal experience popular with all ages.
RiverCenter
While RiverCenter is essentially a mall on the River Walk, it’s hard to ignore the appeal for families. In addition to shops and restaurants, it has Legoland Discovery Center, Sea Life Aquarium and IMAX theatre.
Schlitterbahn
Ok, Schlitterbahn isn’t technically in San Antonio, but it’s only a 40-minute drive away. This is the OG of water parks.
Bottom Line
San Antonio is a beautiful city with so many things to do. In addition to the above attractions, the city has a few dozen museums! If you can only visit one city in Texas, San Antonio gets my vote.
For miles and points enthusiasts, the city has many hotels right on the River Walk and a few nice resorts (like Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort, JW Marriott Hill Country Resort) that are bookable with points. See my recent review of the Gamer Suite at Grand Hyatt San Antonio River Walk.

Love San Antonio Riverwalk but I feel like I need to rent a car and explore other nearby locations and attractions next time!
Nancy says
@Boonie Yeah, we’ve stayed on the River Walk and outside of it and I enjoy both.

You’ll get much better food if you step away from the Riverwalk. Also, The Pearl Brewery is extremely popular for families with its open spaces, access to the north part of the Riverwalk, and many restaurants and shops. Try Landa Park instead of Schlitterbahn.

@strfish7 Thanks for the recommendations!

The Japanese Tea Garden should be on the list. The whole family loved it, and iirc it was free as well.

@Nick Thanks for the recommendation, we will check it out next time we’re in town.
