I’m Experiencing Spring Break FOMO From an Unexpected Source

My kids are on spring break this week. Yesterday morning, as I was walking my dog while snowflakes were falling, I started to regret my spring break choices. We do have travel plans, but we are road tripping around Texas. And unfortunately, this week the weather isn’t stellar in much of the state. We’re looking at a forecast in the 30s and 40s with rain, even in the southern part of Texas.

Originally, we were supposed to be on a Caribbean cruise this week. But due to various Covid postponements, we pushed our cruise to the summer, and this week we’re reconstructing our Christmas road trip.

FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

The beach is my favorite destination over spring break. February is usually cold and drab where I live, and we’ve had a few ice storms recently that have tested my patience with winter. When I see a friend or neighbor posting from a sunny destination this week, I feel a bit of longing in my heart for that sun on my shoulders.

But surprisingly, my friends’ photos aren’t where I’m getting my spring break FOMO from. I’m getting FOMO from my own social media memories!

Yes, Facebook has been torturing me this week with photo memories of my past spring break trips. This one popped up on my phone the other day:

That photo is my husband and oldest son five years ago at the beach at Sheraton Sand Key Resort.

Then, there are my Facebook memories from just one year ago at North Captiva Island.

I’m sure Facebook will soon be torturing me with photos from our Costa Rican vacation, too. That was two years ago, right before Covid.

Our other recent spring break trips include Hawaii (twice!) and Phoenix. Clearly, we have a history and preference for sunshine and water.

On the Bright Side

We may not be going to the beach this year, but we do have some fun things to look forward to. We’re trying out a new water park resort, we’re using points to stay in a themed hotel suite, and we’re seeing family. And, on top of that, I will be eating a ton of excellent Tex-Mex food in South Texas this week!
