Extending my Hyatt Explorist Status for One More Year through MGM Status Match Loop

February 11, 2022 By Nancy 14 Comments

See our Advertiser Disclosure and Editorial Note here.

Ok, folks. We’ve written about this status match merry-go-round trick before. It’s time to hop back on the ride.

If you have Hyatt Explorist status, you can match to MGM Gold status and vice versa. MGM status cycles at the end of January, but Hyatt status cycles at the end of February. Therefore, during the month of February, you can match your Hyatt Explorist status to MGM and then turn around and extend your Hyatt Explorist status for another year.

Why would you want to do this?

Benefits of MGM Gold Status

With gold status, you receive many benefits at MGM Resorts worldwide including:

  • VIP access to nightclubs
  • Waived resort fees
  • Priority check-in line
  • Free Room upgrades (when available)
  • World of Hyatt Explorist Status

See all the benefits here.

Benefits of Hyatt Explorist Status

Unfortunately, having Hyatt Explorist Status no longer comes with suite lounge awards like it did in the past. However, I still want to keep my Explorist status for a few benefits:

  • 20% points earning bonus on stays/purchases
  • Free Room upgrades (when available)
  • 2 p.m. late checkout

See all the Explorist benefits here.

How to Match

Go here, and click on “Learn More.” Sign into your Hyatt account when prompted, and then click on “Opt In.” It may 24 hours for your MGM status to update to Gold, but mine updated instantly.

Once you have Gold Status, go here, and scroll towards the bottom of the page.

Click on the gold box that says “Click Here to Opt In”.

That’s it! You should then see your Hyatt Explorist status date extend through February 2023.

Anybody else doing this status match loop every year?

How do you start this whole loop from nothing?

@Melissa It’s harder than it used to be, but I believe you if you have a small business you can apply for the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card (which gives Wyndham Diamond status) and from there match to Ceasar’s, then match to MGM, then match to Hyatt. I was Explorist and was keeping up through this match loop. A few years ago, though, I though it had ended and didn’t try the match. Sad, since I can’t get back on the loop now.

What do you get from MGM if you are Globolist? Is this new?

@Evelyn This status match loop has been going on for a few years. Hyatt Globalist also matches to MGM Gold. Check out all the MGM benefits here: https://www.mgmresorts.com/en/mgm-rewards/tiers.html

I have stayed 3 times and they have told me that they don’t match globolist unless you are the higher tier at MLife.

This merry go round is so easy that every year I think they are going to close the loophole 🙂

But the truth is because of my status I am a loyal Hyatt guest. Hyatt is my first choice in 100% of my trips. Sometimes I buy points and sometimes I pay cash. I don’t even look for other chain hotels. Explorist status got me early check ins, lounge access for free snacks and light suppers and I got some nice upgrades (like a 1 bedroom suite at the Hyatt Lost Pines or a ocean view room at Hyatt Baha Mar). I don’t travel for work so maintaining status is impossible. I am so grateful for this community and all the tricks of the trade I learned along the years.

@Tania I’m always surprised this works every year! I’m a bit bummed that the lounge access certs are not given anymore, but overall I’m such a huge Hyatt fan.

I was super bummed about the lounge access. The lounge at the Hyatt Baha Mar had sushi and steak sandwiches. I spent very little on lunch (always eating from the pool bar) and I had a great time. Last year I went to Sao Paulo / Brazil to visit my family and the lounge at the Grand Hyatt was amazing (They had a bartender making caipirinhas). I will keep the memories of free food and drinks and I will pray for the benefit to return eventually…..hahahahaha

Do you have Explorist status when you have the WOH card?

@Hilde Unfortunately no, the card gives you Discoverist status.
