Why I Never Book a Cruise on a New Ship’s Inaugural Sailing

Yesterday, Disney Cruise Line announced that its newest upcoming ship, The Disney Wish, will be delayed by six weeks. The delay is due to the impact that Omicron has had on almost every industry. Impacted guests can book a future cruise at a 50% discount. This delay impacts 12 sailings, and it reminded me why I never book a cruise on a new ship’s inaugural sailing.

Delays are Common

Cruise ships are often delayed during production and after a major dry dock. Disney Cruise Line’s first ship, the Disney Magic, rescheduled its maiden voyage twice. Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas was delayed a few times in 2021 along with ships from other cruise lines.

Because people have to plan time off from work in advance as well as purchase flights, these delays can wreak havoc on plans. Not to mention, some cabin categories book up quickly and can be difficult to reschedule when future sailings are already at high occupancy.

Kinks Need to be Worked Out

A new ship, especially when it has a brand new design, requires some time for the kinks to be worked out. Crowd flow, restaurant timing and more need to be fine-tuned. I remember in 2011 when the Disney Dream first launched, guests had many complaints about long waits and crowds. Over time, things improved drastically.

Premium Price

Inaugural sailings cost more than regular sailings. Typically, guests receive some freebies and have access to special merchandise and events. But, for my family, those things are unnecessary.

Of course, I’m sure an inaugural sailing of a new ship has an extra level of excitement. Guests are the first ones to experience new attractions and shows.

However, I’ll play it safe and save money by waiting a few months for a “regular” sailing. I’m booked on a new ship six weeks after its launch date in early 2023, and now I’m a little concerned that I booked too soon! We shall see.

Have you been on an inaugural sailing? How did it work out for you?
