Update: Cancellations now affect 8 NCL ships.
Today, Norwegian Cruise Line communicated to guests the cancellations of two cruises this week due to Covid cases among the crew.
The Norwegian Pearl departed Miami yesterday. The ship is turning around to return to Miami with the rest of the cruise cancelled. Guests on board will not only receive a refund, but also a cruise credit for a future cruise.
Guests who are supposed to depart on the Norwegian Getaway ship tomorrow received a similar letter announcing the cancellation of that sailing. Those guests will receive a full refund plus 20% off their next cruise.
The number of Covid cases has not been communicated. But, I suspect that the ships can’t run effectively with a skeleton crew if too many crew members are infected or in isolation.
Last week, the CDC elevated its warning status for cruse ships to a Level 4, the highest level. The CDC recommends that even vaccinated guests avoid cruise ships at this time.
The announcement set off a firestorm on social media from loyal cruise fans who are angry that this same warning doesn’t apply to air travel and hotels. As I stated in my recent post, Omicron has not been kind to the cruising industry. Many ships have had to cancel ports and entertainment due to Covid. Good thing I have a backup plan for my upcoming cruise.
This is a developing story, and I expect to see more cruise disruptions in the coming weeks.
