I realize that there are many different and strong opinions on the state of the pandemic. Right now, people range from “stay at home” to “don’t do anything differently” and everything in between. For the most part, my family has resumed our pre-pandemic activities. However, in certain situations, we are erring on the side of caution, especially while Covid case counts are rising in our area and across the world.
Changing Plans Due to Omicron
I mentioned on the blog last month that I wrapped up a travel present to put under the tree. It’s a night at Kalahari Resort in Round Rock, Texas. Our kid will love the indoor water park and the entertainment area that includes rides, games, ropes course and more.
At the time we made the reservation, staying at Kalahari over the holidays seemed like a great idea. My daughter would be fully vaccinated by that time.
However, just in the past few days, my husband and I began to feel uneasy about our plans. Obviously, Omicron has been in the news a lot. I have also been shocked and saddened to see two people I know die from Covid in the past two weeks. Knowing that case counts are climbing locally and many folks in Texas are not vaccinated, the idea of spending two days in a crowded, indoor space does not seem like a good idea anymore.
Thankfully, I was able to reschedule our stay for early summer. And, since my kids never even knew about this trip, they are not disappointed about the postponement.
A Better Alternative
Instead of going home immediately after seeing family, I decided to at least book one night at a hotel to break up the drive. But then, I started looking at how great the weather was going to be, and I hatched an idea. Somehow, even very last minute, I found availability on points for a sweet suite in a hotel in a different city where we can spend most of our time outdoors. We haven’t been to the area in several years, and it’s one of my favorite spots in Texas.
Are we guaranteed to stay healthy with these new plans? Of course not. But, I am more comfortable with the lower risk. Kalahari Resort isn’t going anywhere, and we will enjoy it just as much a few months later.

Sorry I missed this a couple of days ago. You made the right choice. Keeping your family safe is always a prudent move. I’m glad you found something else that works better. Ignore the fringe element comments. Enjoy the holidays!

Thank you, Christian! I hope you enjoy the holidays as well.

Dudes–Calm down. Deciding not to go to a crowded indoor water park during a spike in cases is hardly letting Covid run my life. I went on a cruise a few months ago, remember? I don’t think these types of decisions are black or white. Everyone has a different level of comfort with each situation depending on the time and circumstances. I’m not telling you to cancel your plans. This is just what my family is doing for this particular trip. Thanks for reading, and Happy Holidays!

Good lord. The hysteria is unreal still.
This is a pandemic of the *vaccinated* now.
Since the vaccine doesn’t prevent the spread, or catching covid.
Those who got covid ‘naturally’ have much better protection and immunity.
All of those who got vaccinated will be suffering for the rest of their lives :/
Very sad how everyone got duped here.

I flew internationally yesterday.
It’s amazing what happens when you don’t listen to the corporate media and just live your life.

Totally agree! Don’t understand giving kids this shot when kids aren’t dying from covid, plus the data is in about the potential harm of spike proteins. Why not just let them get natural immunity!? Please research Dr Robert Malone who invented m-RNA technology or Dr Peter McCullough, who is a cardiologist in Texas.

Can’t wait till 2030 when the blog will say for the 150th time I changed my plans do to covid..
Itcaunt going away. The flu is a coronavirus. If you are going to let it run your life, be my guest.

Couldn’t agree more, however, it’s the restrictions that bite and not a flu. It’s hard to travel when countries and travel can be shut down at a moments notice.

If you are trying to make a point about influenza vs. coronavirus, you may want to get your facts straight. Influenza virus is not one of the coronaviruses. It is true that about 25% of all typical cold is caused by one of the coronaviruses. However, the virus that causes COVID-19 is especially infectious and morbid than most of the garden variety coronaviruses. You may want to look that up on your handy interwebs.

I was going to ask if you changed your plans because of concerns about being on a flight, but it looks like maybe you wouldn’t have been flying.
Nancy says
Yeah, this is just a Texas road trip. 🙂
