Cheers and Jeers: School Calendar Revealed

Earlier this week, my kids’ school district published the approved calendar for the 2022-2023 school year. I’m happy that the school board approved the calendar an entire month earlier than they did this past school year.

Since I now have high schoolers, I’m not pulling my kids out of school for trips. Our vacations live and die by the school calendar.

However, per usual, the calendar reveal was met with a chorus of cheers and jeers from parents. This new calendar does have some big changes from prior years. Parents are not holding back their frustration and disappointment on social media. While some love the changes, it’s really impossible to please everyone.

I’m just relieved that I can solidify our travel plans (and make new ones!)

Winter Break

For this next school year, our winter break is a bit weird. Kids start break on December 23, but they don’t go back to school until January 10. Many parents are upset that this break doesn’t leave much travel time to see family for Christmas. Also, working parents of younger kids are bummed that they have to take vacation days in early January.

However, I actually love this timing. Having the majority of the time off after the holidays gives kids more free time to play with their gifts. In addition, that time in early January after the New Year’s holiday is a great time to travel! Most other kids will be back in school.

Am I planning a trip for that time? You bet I am!

Spring Break

The district moved our spring break back a week. It no longer matches the same week as all of our adjacent school districts. It also likely doesn’t follow the community college schedule. This is somewhat problematic for high school kids who take dual enrollment classes.

Unfortunately, I already booked a cruise for the wrong week. It won’t be a huge deal to move it, but it will likely cost more money.

Three- and Four-Day Weekends

I’m happy to see several three- and four-day weekends spread throughout the school year. My oldest son will be a senior (gulp!) and we might need those days to visit some colleges. For now, I’m keeping those dates open and not planning getaways.

Last Day of School

School is ending relatively early on May 19. I will likely be a blubbering mess by then as my son graduates. But, I do like this date because we can get a jump on our trip to Europe before the heat and crowds.
