Saying Yes to 0% Promo APR via Snail Mail Offer

A few days ago, I received a letter in the mail from Bank of America. Usually, I barely read these letters because they are pushing for balance transfers and cash-advance checks on cards I own.

But, this letter grabbed my attention:

This 0% APR offer on new purchases for 12 months is for a current card I own with Bank of America, the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card.

Why I’m Opting In

I love 0% APR offers on current cards. Why, since I’m all about being debt free? I view it as just another tool I can use to maximize my points and spread out my spending. This is why Dave Ramsey would shake his head at me.

To be clear, I’m not talking about 0% balance transfers. I don’t have any credit card balances. But 0% on purchases? Yes, sign me up!

I have a cruise I need to pay off soon. While I do have the money saved up, I’m considering putting it on this 0% offer instead. The money would then be in my savings account to earn American Airline miles for a year. Also, I’d like to put a deposit down on a 2023 European cruise soon. This offer would be a great tool for me to spread out that expense over a year instead of dipping into savings.

Don’t Screw Up!

Banks count on people screwing up these promo offers. You still have to pay a minimum payment each month. And, if you had a prior balance, that amount isn’t subject to the 0% rate.

In addition, some people will spend too much with this type of offer. When you know you don’t have to pay for it for 12 months, it’s tempting to keep piling on the purchases.

Don’t screw up! Be one of those people who uses these offers responsibly.

Regardless if I use this offer or not, I activated it just in case. It does not obligate me to use the card.

How do you feel about 0% APR offers? Have you received any lately?

This isn’t a balance transfer offer – there are no checks involved.

Even more appealing if inflation continues for a while at 6%+ YoY.
