Almost one year ago, I purchased a Discount Den membership from Frontier Airlines. For $59.99 per year, the membership gave me access to cheaper fares as well as special Kids Fly Free deals on special dates. See my post from last year here.
I had high hopes for this membership. I planned to use it for multiple flights to Denver and Orlando. And I did, and the cost was worth it. However, I just canceled my membership. Why?
I’m not flying to Denver as much. Since my mom passed away earlier this year, my family won’t be flying back to Denver several times a year.
Flight times from Orlando are not convenient. While my family is going to Orlando for a cruise in a few months, the only direct flight from Orlando on Frontier leaves at ~7 a.m. That doesn’t work with cruise ship debarkation timing.
My family has no plans to return to Orlando later in the year. Believe it or not, after this upcoming cruise, we have no more plans to return to Orlando. Shocking, I know.
DFW isn’t a Frontier hub. Aside from Denver and Orlando, there aren’t many (if any) nonstop flights on Frontier from DFW.
My family didn’t like Frontier seats. They complained that the seats were uncomfortable, the tray tables were very tiny and the entire experience felt cheap. And that’s saying a lot since they fly on Spirit, Southwest and Sun Country with no complaints. I do agree with them, but for the right price on a short flight I think the seats are fine.
The bottom line is that I likely won’t be flying Frontier in the next year, so keeping the Discount Den membership is pointless. Last year, after I bought the membership, I put a calendar reminder on my phone to re-evaluate it this year. The membership auto-renews each year, so if I forgot about it I would continue to be charged year after year. I highly recommend putting a note on your calendar for any membership you buy, and always read the fine print to see if it auto-renews.
