Royal Cariibbean’s CEO has been teasing a big announcement the past few days. Today, the company announced its first around-the-world cruise.
This new “Ultimate World Cruise” visits 150 destinations over the span of 274 nights. The cruise visits all seven continents and 11 greatest wonders of the world. The cruise departs Miami on December 10, 2023 and returns on September 10, 2024. See the press release here.
The Itinerary
Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise has an itinerary that is divided into four main parts or “expeditions.” The first expedition is Americas and Antarctica. Highlights include multiple Caribbean islands, Machu Picchu and New Year’s Eve in Rio de Janeiro.
Next, the cruise heads to Asia and the Pacific. Guests will explore French Polynesia, Australia and New Zealand before heading to several stops in Asia.
The third leg of the cruise visits Middle East Treasures and Marvels of the Med. Stops include Dubai, Egypt, Greece and Italy.
The final expedition is Capitals of Culture. Cruisers get a taste of Spain, Russia and Scandinavia before returning to the U.S. via New York to Miami.
The Ship
The ship for this Ultimate World Cruise is Serenade of the Seas. This ship launched in 2002 and holds almost 2500 passengers. At 99,000 gross tons, it’s considered one of the cruise line’s smaller ships.
The pool on Serenade of the Seas has a retractable roof, so swimming is possible in all weather conditions. Outdoor recreation includes mini-golf and a rock climbing wall. In addition to the main dining rooms and the Windjammer buffet, guests can choose to dine at specialty restaurants on board like Izumi (Asian restaurant) and Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen.
The Cost
This cruise goes on sale today for Crown & Anchor Society Diamond members and above. According to USA Today, prices start at ~$61,000 per person before taxes and fees. However, guests have the option of booking segments of the cruise separately.
The price includes business class airfare, pre-cruise hotel, premium airport and hotel transfers, deluxe beverage package, on-board internet, laundry and gratuities.
Yes, it’s a crazy expensive price. However, other cruise lines who have offered this type of extended world cruise have experienced very quick sell-outs.
My Thoughts
Before the pandemic, I dreamed of going on an around-the-world cruise. Sure, we’d have to wait until we retire, and it would cost a huge chunk of money. However, this type of cruise would give us a sample of so many places. Based on our experiences, we could then pick places we want to explore further on future land trips.
However, because of the pandemic, I’m just not sure anymore. Nine months is a long time to be on a cruise ship. For sure, I wouldn’t book a room that doesn’t have a balcony. You never know what types of quarantines could happen, and without fresh air I would go crazy.
It’s a long time to miss my kids and dogs, regardless if they are grown and flown at the time. And then of course, there’s the money. But, never say never.

I love cruises, and absolutely love to travel. To see the world would be such an incredible experience. But 274 consecutive nights on a cruise itinerary? Eh… not sure on that part.
Nancy says
@projectx Yep, a bit much.
