I know it sounds weird. Celebrating America’s most patriotic holiday, the 4th of July, in another country? But, plenty of Americans do it. My family just did. Why?
Many Resorts in Mexico Celebrate U.S. and Canadian Holidays
Resorts in Mexico have plenty of guests from the U.S. and Canada. Because of this, they don’t hesitate to decorate and plan events around these special holidays.
When my family was in Puerto Vallarta a few years ago in October, the resort was celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving. After all, that’s why many Canadians were vacationing at the time.
During our recent trip to Cancun, our resort had a full day of celebrations planned for the 4th of July. Entertainment crew members wore special red, white and blue outfits. There was a parade in the afternoon and barbecue for lunch. In the evening, there was a special theatre show and outdoor dinner with patriotic photo ops. To top it off, the hotel launched fireworks over the beach. The holiday was a big deal.
The great thing about being at a resort for fireworks is that we didn’t have to fight traffic and crowds after the event. We could simply walk back to our room with no stress.
Slow Time at Work
4th of July week is typically a slow week at most offices. My husband’s employer closes the offices for three days that week. When I was working in the corporate world, this holiday week was one of the quietest weeks in the office and a perfect time to get away without having to catch up on too much.
Weather
Most people think of escaping to Mexico during winter. However, many resort pools in Mexico are not heated in the winter and are actually quite chilly. Heated pools are rare in Cancun and Cozumel.
In July, the low temperatures stay in the 70s, which keeps the pools comfortable. Warm temperatures and low rainfall make the 4th of July the perfect time to enjoy the pools and a cold drink.
The Price
I was pleasantly surprised to find that resort prices in Cancun are cheaper during 4th of July week compared to Spring Break week. Woohoo!
My family will likely be in Europe next year for 4th of July where I’m sure there will not be a big hoopla for the holiday. But in the future, I absolutely would consider returning to Mexico for the 4th of July holiday.

I never go to Cancun in the winter because the pools are to cold. I only do Mexico April-October.

@Jim Good plan. I read too many reviews that say the pools are freezing in the winter. We went to a resort in Cozumel in March and the pool was too cold for me.
