The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From the Tree

Most of you have probably heard the phrase “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” This past month, I’m realizing just how true that can be.

My Dad and Bank Accounts

Since my parents passed away, we’ve had to deal with getting their affairs in order. Well, mostly my brother has had to deal with it. But one thing was clear: my dad loved having multiple bank accounts. He had them all over town. We have memories as kids going to different banks and making deposits. It really was one of my dad’s hobbies. Back in that day, banks offered material incentives like toasters or a set of encyclopedias.

I was talking about this with my husband and lamenting how tedious it was. But then my husband said, “You know, you do the same exact thing, just with credit cards.”

He’s absolutely right. I micro-manage credit card applications and rewards for a big payoff in miles and points. My dad was doing the same, just on a different scale for bank accounts. He was ahead of his time.

Note to self: When I get older, I will condense my credit cards. My kids will have a hard time figuring this out after I’m gone. Heck, even my husband can’t deal with all of our cards.

My Son and Vacation Planning

I am the vacation planner of my family. Of course, I ask my family for input. Most of the time, they say they’re fine with whatever I decide (especially my husband, who just likes to show up for vacations but not plan them).

But the past few months, one of my kids has really taken up vacation planning. Before our trip to Disney World and Universal, my 13-year-old researched the parks in-depth via various YouTube videos. When we got to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, he already knew his way around. Same thing when we got to Universal Studios. He knew which rides were in which parks, and could tell us which direction to go. I doubted him at first, but he really knew his stuff.

My kids know that we are planning a trip to Paris next summer, and my son had already started his research. He’s determined that we need to visit the Baccarat crystal museum in Paris. Why? It has a crystal YouTube sculpture. Really, it does. And to him, that’s super interesting and cool. Since he’s under 18, his admission into the museum is free.

I can’t help but be pleased at this development with him. Now we can research future destinations together and compare notes.

Do you have kids or parents with similar hobbies?

Have a great weekend!

That warms my heart! I’ll be content if both my kids continue to enjoy traveling as they mature, but I would be over the moon if one or both of them enjoyed the planning and researching part as much as I do! 😉 they’re both still really young so I’ll just have to wait and see.

We start our big summer today. I’m actually typing this at the gate. Last night, my nine-year-old daughter said: “Thanks for planning this trip mom. I really needed it.” And that is how we are alike. 😊
