All of the stars have aligned in such a way that all three of our kids are at overnight camps this week. ALL. THREE. KIDS. We are officially kid-free this week, for the first time ever!
I know that for some families, this is a frequent occurrence and not a big deal. But as I’ve explained before, it’s a huge deal for us. We don’t have willing family members nearby, and overnight babysitters are impossible to find!
We would have loved to have this sleep-away camp arrangement in previous years. However, we didn’t feel our youngest child was old enough for the experience. Plus, overnight summer camps aint cheap when you have three kids $$$.
All of our kids are thrilled to be going to camp. I hope they have many adventures this week!
What We Wanted to Do
We tossed around several ideas of what to do this week. Of course, we really wanted to travel somewhere by ourselves. But, we didn’t want to travel too far in case an emergency happened at camp.
We considered these two ideas:
- Travel to Texas hill country and stay at a quant Bed and Breakfast
- Use points to stay at Miraval Austin (see my previous post)
As it turns out, we are doing neither of these things this week. Why not? Well, I can hardly believe it myself. My husband and I have the opportunity to travel to Hawaii by ourselves in a few months thanks to a generous gift from his employer. We even have childcare lined up! Because of that trip and a few other trips we have planned for later this year, we decided to make this week a staycation week at home.
What We’re Actually Doing
Don’t worry, it won’t be business as usual at home this week. After months of waiting, we finally have a pool in our backyard. We plan to enjoy some pool time without the kids and invite some friends over for a backyard barbecue.
Other plans include:
- Painting an upstairs bedroom
- Test driving a few cars (since we now have 3 drivers in our family)
- Going to movies our kids don’t care about
- Eating at restaurants our kids don’t like (hello Greek food and sushi!)
- Throwing out junk our kids are hoarding that they won’t miss (c’mon, ya’ll know what I mean!)
Yes, we’re a wild and crazy couple. Ha! This week is going to fly by. We will miss our kids like crazy, I’m sure. But for now, we will enjoy this time to ourselves.
