2020 is over, and yet still here we are, with raging virus cases all over the U.S.A. While there is hope that things will improve in 2021, we’re not quite there yet.
My kids’ spring break is just two months away, and the rest of our vacation home rental fee is due next week. We have to either commit to the trip or back out now to get a refund.
As of this moment, we are taking the trip. Why? When we canceled the cruise we had originally planned for this spring break, I purposely planned a trip to a pandemic-friendly destination where we could isolate ourselves. We’re staying on an island with limited people and services. At the time I booked our rental, I figured the pandemic would be over by the time the actual trip rolled around, and I was just being extra cautious. Ha! I was wrong.
While I still consider our upcoming trip to be lower-risk than other trips, we are taking extra steps to make our trip even less risky.
Parking at Terminal
Usually when my family goes to the airport, we take an Uber or park off-site to save money. For this trip, we will spend a little more to park right at the terminal. This will reduce our proximity to other people in enclosed spaces since we won’t have to take a shared shuttle to the terminal.
Wearing KN95 Masks
For our 2-hour flights, we will be wearing KN95 masks. Those are the ones that look like duck beaks. In theory, they are better than regular masks.
Using Private Water Taxi
To get to North Captiva Island, I booked a private water taxi instead of a shared boat taxi. Round-trip, it only costs us $60 more. That’s a small price to pay to have our own air for the trip over.
Avoiding Indoor Restaurant
The island only has three restaurants open at this time, and one of them is indoors and over the water. While the indoor restaurant gets rave reviews, we will be skipping it, just as we avoid indoor restaurants at home. We are ordering groceries for our house rental and plan to eat the majority of our meals at home.
Bottom Line
I understand that everyone has different views about living and traveling during the pandemic. We all have different risks that we’re comfortable taking. I hope that by taking these extra precautions, we can still enjoy our time at the beach while remaining healthy.

If parking at DFW, we have found making reservations for terminal parking in advance is cheaper than just driving up and parking. They have a very generous cancellation policy as well.
But maybe you’re flying SW…
Nancy says
Thanks for the tip, Lindy! I will look into that.

Nancy, we did the same as you on a recent WDW trip. It’s been 21 days since we left and 16 since we returned home and no COVID symptoms. We parked at airport instead of Uber. KN95 masks and face shields on plane, no indoor dining and isolated outdoor dining, skipped the “fireworks” at Magic Kingdom too. We had a fun, safe time.
Nancy says
@Jane I’m glad to hear your precautions worked out and you had a great time!

Are your kids already used to wearing a mask? If not might be best to do some at home practice.
Nancy says
@Clyn6 My kids are good with wearing masks for long periods of time but I think I need to do some at-home practice myself. I’m prone to claustrophobia, but I survived wearing a mask almost all day this past summer. 🙂

I think that sounds like a solid plan. While my family won’t be flying anytime soon, I understand that it’s a personal choice everyone has to make for themselves. The projection model indicates that new cases in US will be down by March, so fingers crossed. I absolutely think that flying for two hours beats driving for two days when it comes to risks. A note on KN95 masks: I find that most are designed for adults. If you know a place that sells child-size, let me know.
Edit: I do see that some online stores now sell child-size KN95 masks, which is great.

Thanks for mentioning the mask size. I bought adult size masks but didn’t think about it being too big for my daughter.

No worries! I just bought these masks on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08HYJNLYZ/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It doesn’t say KN95 in description, but reviews indicate that. I think your daughter is a little older than my son, so I will let you know how they fit. You still have time till March.
