For most of us, 2020 hasn’t been a year full of travel. However, I’m hopeful that many of us can make up for cancelled trips in 2021. As a travel lover, I enjoy giving and receiving gifts that relate to my travel passion. Here are some of my favorite ideas. Note: None of these links are affiliate links.
A Good Set of Headphones
Having a good set of headphones is crucial during long flights. During our 17-hour flight from Dallas to Sydney last year, our noise cancelling headphones helped us get some decent sleep. For international trips, I recommend noise cancelling headphones that have a detachable cable option to plug into the plane’s entertainment system. For domestic flights, since more planes are using personal devices for entertainment, a pair of Apple AirPods Pro is a good choice.
Vacation Countdown Calendar
My kids and I always look forward to the countdown leading up to our big trips! Amazon and Etsy sell all types of vacation countdowns, or you can make your own.
Travel Laundry Bags
Travel laundry bags make a great gift for any traveler. They fold up easily in any suitcase and hold more laundry than the hotel plastic bags. I like having my family’s dirty clothes separated from other items in our suitcases for the trip home.
DNA Kit
I’ve heard from several people that there is nothing comparable to traveling to the place of your roots. A DNA kit like the one from 23andMe can provide a traveler valuable insight of where to explore their heritage.
Audible Membership or Gift Card
Many travelers look forward to reading a good book on vacation. Rather than give bulky paper books, give the gift of audiobooks with a membership or gift card to Audible.
Luggage Scale
Luggage scales are portable and useful, especially if your trip involves international airlines with different luggage weight limits.
Free Hotel Night
If you own credit cards that come with a free anniversary night (like the Chase IHG card or the Chase World of Hyatt card), give your favorite traveler your free night. Make sure to add their names to your reservation so that they can check in without you.
Museum Membership
Museum memberships make great gifts for families or individuals. If you get a membership from an ASTC member museum, the membership extends to participating museums all over the U.S. and Canada. A few years ago, my family used our membership at the local Perot Museum to visit other science museums during our trips to Colorado, New York and Florida.
Gift Cards for Travel Destinations
If you know someone’s upcoming travel destination, give gift cards for dining, shopping or entertainment in the area. My kids always ask for Disney gift cards before we visit the parks or go on a Disney cruise.
