Covid Drama on Cruise Ship in the Caribbean

This week, a small cruise ship began sailing in the Caribbean. This is the first cruise ship since March to sail in the region. The ship, SeaDream I, carries less than 250 passengers and is therefore not subject to the CDC sailing restrictions.

The ship sailed from Barbados on Saturday for a week-long cruise. Passengers were tested for Covid twice before boarding. The drama started that day when TPG writer Gene Sloan posted photos of the crew without masks on while greeting passengers. Because of public backlash over that photo, the cruise line changed its mask policy two days later and required masks.

Yesterday, in a not-so-shocking turn of events, a passenger tested positive for Covid-19. Passengers are quarantined in their cabins while health officials await results of Covid tests. You can follow Gene’s story here and on Twitter.

I’m sure the big cruise lines are watching how this unfolds, as is the public. I can’t believe the cruise line did not require masks for the first two days.

My family loves cruising. I have two cruises booked–in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022. I really hope the cruising industry can figure this out before it goes bankrupt.

Do you think this small ship can continue cruising? How will the cruise industry recover from these losses?
